old knife vs new knife

You are very fortunate to have that piece of history in your possession. It is a great looking knife, the patina on the blade is priceless.
If the handle will not work for you and you must modify it, that is fine. Make it yours with a new one or sand/shape it to your liking.
It will only add to the story that your grand children will be telling theirs.
By the way, welcome to the forum, this it a great place to hang.
Keep us posted on your handle and sheath project, be sure to include photos.

These kind of stories are my favorite thing about this forum, thanks for sharing. I agree with the folks who say to keep the knife and use it. At a minimum, do NOT throw it away, it's a neat little piece of history. Redo the handle as needed and of course make a sheath for it, but I say use it, you won't destroy it. It doesn't have any huge monetary value, so you're not hurting it there, either.

I love old steel. My neighbour brought over an "old piece of junk" to see if I could do something with it...

I cleaned it up a bit and put a decent working convex edge on it. Would have broke my heart had he just thrown it away! Still plenty o' life left in his old Tramontina...

It looks plenty useable, so use it! It's fun to use the old knives and think about what a relative, friend, or stranger put it through during its life. By the patina I'm thinking that it did plenty of work and is ready for more
