"Old Knives"

Needham3-1.jpg

I don't know why, but when I see knives this old that are in this kind of condition...NEW LOOKING...it almost takes my breath away. That knife is just flat cool!:cool:

This is the latest additon to my collection; a sportsman's knife made in the late 1800s by John Blyde of Sheffield. It is 4 inches closed, not including the shackel, and all attachments still tight and snappy.

That latest knife is great s-k! You don't often see tip bolsters on a big knife like that. Are they "pushed up*" or added to the liners.

*one piece with the liners

Thank-you for the kind compliments Kerry and Charlie. Except for a few spiders on the springs, and a little use of the spatula perhaps, the Needham Bros is near minty. To answer your question Charlie, the bolsters (nickle silver) are added on to the brass liners.

Knifehead and S-K those are great pieces. The spatula on a four blade, that's got to be rare.
The tip bolsters and the tight stag on the sportsman...beautiful. Tip blosters look classy I think.

IMO,he may have been pushing it,for Moose & Marlin,as the handle suggests. But maybe that's what he was personally into,& just was on there for decoration, rather a suggestion. What do you think ?

Quoted ,from the owner :
"3 1/2" closed. Heavily used and sharpened, blackened blades thinned out and sharp as little razors. Tight as a new knife, perfectly crisp half stops, perfect bladesnap in both directions. The color you see is the color it actually is. A hundred or so years of use ages this stuff nicely. You can not only see the grain in person, but FEEL it. I carry and use this knife"

Vince,

As far as the moose and marlin goes, the old saying, if your going to be a bear, might as well be a grizzly bear!:D

You have been posting some really neat knives as of late. You guys that post here do not realize how often I come here for ideas, grinds, overall look of the old knives. Please dont stop!

Lots of beautiful old knives posted. I spent a very enjoyable hour and half or so going through this thread again last evening. The beauty, variety and quality of the old cutlery is amazing. The other thing I noticed is the momentum this thread has built over time. Initially, a few sporadic posts, then a little more regular, and it has really taken-off in just the last few months. Many thanks to all of you who have shared your knives, knowledge and comments here.
