John (Peanut) inspired me. If all he carries is a peanut, 4 way screwdriver, and p-38, I can carry just one knife. I am too old to use a p-38, or 4 way screwdriver, so I am just going to carry my Vic SAK Cadet. (at least till he comes home). Hopefully I'll learn to strop the blade properly. Who knows, maybe that will be the one that's "worth it's weight in gold" to me.

I use to carry a Leatherman/Bucktool in addition to having my Cadet II on my key chain. Now except for work I only carry the Cadet for my utility needs.

Rather than the P-38, you can always spring for the larger P-51. I've heard they're much easier to use.

The four-way screwdriver is neat. Fits very nicely in my wallet, without it banging around on my key chain. It helped adjust a sprinkler head the other day when I couldn't find a decently sized flathead, otherwise.

As for knives, I've narrowed it down to two that I really like...a huge ol' Pac Salt that is lighter than air, and my GEC Barlow that will rust if you look at it sideways. I love both knives, and can't bring myself to choose between the two. I've been toying with the idea of picking up a yellow stainless peanut to pair with my Pac Salt. It might be better suited than a carbon blade barlow.

And how has John "The Peanut" been getting along with that edc combo?

He has to give us a full report when he gets back, you know. Give him our regards and to be carefull!

We just call him Peanut. When he came home on leave, an Amish farmer he knows shot a bear, & John field dressed it with his YHCV Peanut. Everyone here just carries YHCV Soddy Jr.'s They asked him what kind of knife it was, and the name stuck.
As far as his edc goes, even on the times he goes out, he said it's all he needs. His only complaint is that the doc stole his original one, and his pocket stones keep breaking.
I e-mailed him he'll probably get to a regular computer in about a week.

I used to have a little P-38 attached to my keychain, but the bugger broke halfway into a can of coconut milk. I keep a P-51 in my tin, a.k.a. wallet.

I have a P-51 in my pack, and it follows me everywhere.

Moving over to "General" where this discussion is a better fit.

That's a Pioneer not a Cadet :)

How is stropping easy?
I just started to strop, and you still have to keep the knife at a right angle same as free hand sharpening?

Pioneer has an awl/reamer, whereas the Cadet has a smaller pen blade. Wait, was that right? Or was it that the Recruit had the pen blade and the Cadet had a file? There's too many versions.

By "right" angle I'm assuming you mean "correct"? If you hold your blade at a right angle (90 degrees) you will have lots of trouble.;)

Stropping is easy, you don't have to be as precise with a strop, as they are much more forgiving than a stone.

It is a Cadet II with a pen blade
A Cadet has a nail file instead of the pen blade

You are right (correct :) ) it is not a Pioneer.
I think it is indeed a Recruit.

You may want to take a second look at your thread title. You're not scaring old ladies to death, are you?

I though the Cadet was discontinued a few years back and the Cadet 2 is the one you can buy today. I just bought a Cadet (Alox version) and it has a nail file. The Alox version is discontinued also as far as I know.

Scare me, heavens no. If I want to be scared I'll watch my hubby with his chainsaw.

The p-38 beats any scout type can opener period. It's also a perfect fish gutter. The Sears 4 way screwdriver you can torque till the cows come home & it'll still be good. Combine the p-38+1 corner of the 4 way, & you got instant pliers.;)
My Peanut came yesterday, the guy I ordered from sort of screwed up the order he sent an Amber Bone SS. He said to keep this 1 & he'll send the YHCV model tonight, at no charge. When I get back I'll keep this ABSS for church. Thin as the blade is it cuts like a lazer even if it is SS. Plus it'll always be shiny.:D
Question, am I the only guy that keeps a roll of electrical tap on me? Everyone makes fun of the little tupperware tub I keep & the things I keep in it.
