I came across an old leg vice earlier today. I tried not to dance as I packed it to the truck, but I may have ....just a little. My forge is still small, still using a RR anvil, so you can imagine how I felt when I saw this sitting in a thrift store for $50. Threads look brand new!

I'm wondering about the stamp. It wouldn't show up in a photo, but it reads (hammer mark)??MITE - PITTSBUROH. Tried searching for a town or name, but nothing comes up, just results of people misspelling Pittsburgh. Anyone seen this mark or have an idea where this comes from?

It seems to be it pretty good shape. There's plenty of hammer marks around the jaws, but no chips on the edges or corners. The threads are nick free and shiny.

After reading a little bit about it, I still couldn't guess where it's from. It does have some design thrown into the function though. Screwbox looks like a ridged bell, the feet are tapered and flared out. I would take another photo but my camera batteries only had enough juice for the last shot.

It looks very similar to the smaller vice in photo subbed "Pair of English Blacksmith Leg Vices from the Parlett Farm Museum sale" on the anvilfire page. The screwbox and angled cutouts are almost matched.

After some more sanding on the patina, I think it does say Pittsburgh. The pitting has turned the G into a perfect O, and Pittsburoh doesn't seem to exist anyway.
