Old Military Knife

Hi S-K, is the pin for the bale brass or steel? It look to be brass in your pic', if so it dates the knife to pre 1916, when brass became too precious to use for this part of the knife .
The 'I' is an inspectors mark I believe, why do you think it refers to India?
I saw the same marking on a later knife at the weekend , it was on the spike , not the blade.I'll have to have a further dig in my books .

Paul.

Hi Paul. Thanks for the help. Yes the pin for the bale is brass.

I have not been able to find a photo, but on web site about Khukuri knives I found this quote "The marks on the blades vary widely, but these are guaranteed Indian produced marks: an I with the broad arrow over it...." It also says that Khukuri blades were sometimes contracted out to makers in Sheffield. I put two & two together and maybe have forty seven, but it is somewhat consistent with other commonwealth marks e.g. broad arrow and C, broad arrow & NZ etc. That's all I have for now. Thanks again.

Here's a Harrison Brothers & Howson, not marked "sheffield" so possibly not made for export. It seems to fit in with the thread. Strong springs on a huge knife, this 4 3/4" knife was made for tough usage!
