i went snooping around a while back and found some old mine shafts . dont know a whole lot about them other than there dangerous (gas , cave ins, drowning ) . i went with a buddy of mine and his dog , found one that had a large pool of fog around the mouth and we desided to step just inside the entrance to cool off as it was 102 that day. we sniffed the air and desided to send the dog in first justincase , dog went in a good ways and we then shortly followed roped up with all our gear . ther was about a million sallamanders on the wall and 2 feet of silty mud with a layer of water on the top . we didnt go very far just about 25 yards then we concurde that we should leave and not tell anybody where we found it so as to keep people from investigating it further. witch brings me to my question , any of yall know much about old mine shafts ? no egotistical preaching either!!! i dont plan on returning ....... to damn dangerous!!

oh good gawd ! its a forum for cryin out loud , say what ever you want say running boar , its fine . just half joking a little . i aint gonna be easily offended and actually learn things from people that way . go for it , what ya got?

There was something on the news recently, in a town called Chloride, AZ (right out side of Kingman...a place I once called home). Two girls were riding around on their ATV and they fell into an abandoned mine shaft. One of them died, and the other was seriously injured. Sad story, really.

yeah sometimes with erosion and how close to the surface the mine was dug i guess you could find sink holes around . good point .

Ok, here goes, you knew exactly the reaction you would get when you posted, thats the reason for the "no preaching" disclaimer. Every friday I am required to give a safety briefing to my soldiers before we go home for the weekend, it always ends with "if you think that something your doing is stupid, then it is, don't do it in the first place". You knew going into that mine without gear and I assume, proper training, was stupid yet you did it anyway then posted on the internet about it.

Would you like for me to applaud you for your stupidity? Chris

is there propper training for going into said mine shafts ? i dunno. didnt try to offend you or anything . i think the last time these old mines where operational was in the late 1800s . witch im sure are different from current mine shafts . yeah it was a dum thng to do i agree . but on the other foot i could have got on my belly and crawled as far as i could go but didnt . no way am i going back in there . i would like some info on these peices of history though. thanks.

Try a google search for mining in your area.

About that time period some very nasty chemicals were used in mining, if you don't believe me take a trip to Copper Hill TN, that may be another concern snooping around old mine sites. Chris

I strongly suggest that you refrain from insulting comments. He fully explained what he did and is aware of the situation that might have occurred. He knows it was not a smart thing to do. There is no need for you to get preachy on him. Either answer the question he asked or shut it.

hell, if i came across that while hiking, i wud certainly take a peek to :)

i'd even take a few pics :D

i know some gasses you can smell some you cant . btw i dont live to far away from you . ive stompped all over copper hill, and was a raft guide on the ocoee for about 5 years but never really had an interest for the mines around ducktown or polk . ill take your advice and start snooping in a safer manner from behind the keyboard . at the time of my little excursion i did have some gear , not the kind for cave rescue but the kind for top rope climbing . thats what i was there for initially.

Suggestion noted, I however did not insult him I insulted what he did and stand by everything I said. IMO there is no need for you to get "preachy" on me. Chris

It's a small world I am from just across the line in NC, and have an uncle that lives in Cleveland, TN. Chris

hell , im in cleveland right now . just pass the ocoee visitor center ? i took my ems classes in chrokee county , up there at there tiny little fire hall on the hill. lotsa cool stuff in them thar hills.

A few years back, two teenagers went to explore an abandoned mine shaft down in Orange County (south of L.A.).
The mine had some standing water, and not far from the entrance, a barricade of some sort was placed width-wise to prevent entry(it had not fallen from the roof, as I recall).
Well, these two could see under the barricade, and decided to simply swim under it, as the water wasn't that deep.
When they came up on the other side, they were dead.
Literaly. The coroner said they were dead as doornails in seconds.
On your excursion, the dog was breathing air close to the surface; you and your friend could have walked right into a terrible situation, and the dog would be non the worse for wear.
Do be carefull when spelunking.

hear there is GOLD in nearby rock creek trail just gotta pan for it in the creek.

My wife is from Andrews NC, and I am from Robbinsville. I grew up 15 minutes from the Nantahala river, I knew it before NOC, I'm showing my age now. :o

My wife's father was from Ducktown and died of colon cancer when he was 38. I have always been leery of all those chemicals around that area, can't be good for you. Chris
