I picked up this old E.C. Simmons Keen Cutter #5 chopping axe at the PA. Trappers rendezvous. I replaced the handle. This will be great for winter camping.

Wow - that's got a cool looking head on it. I've never seen one quite like that.

Looks heavy - Any idea what the weight is?

It's about the same as my Wetterlings forest axe. Maybe a tad heavier.

looks like a handy axe.
how long is the handle?

are you going to thin out the edge at all and give it your famous convex edge? i once got an antique axe and the edge was so thick that i couldn't thin it out without wearing outa couple of belts at least so i just use it to split up small logs now, like a lightweight maul.

Nice score man. I love those old Keen Kutters, I about bought a hatchet I saw at an antique store last weekend, but funds were a little scarce at the time. Might have to wonder on in and see if its still there.

"KEEN KUTTER" - the collectors like that stuff. Nice to find a "user-grade" old tool. Looks like it will make life a little easier in winter camping.

siguy, actually the edge was pretty good. Someone did a very good job on it. I put a 32" hickory handle on it.

Looks like one of those old competition lumberjack axes.

I think the Simmons Keen Kutter stuff was made in the early 40's or before.

Pretty sweet. Pat
