Old/New YCS comparison - Part 1

AA, if you manage to get one of these YCS' don't use it! You'll fall head over heals for it. I worked mine hard for several hours non stop and it is the first khuk that did not have some kind of hotspot that needed to be smoothed. It does so many things so well (in regards to chopping), that you will fall back to your other khuks only when you need a specific task done (i.e. a big'un for chopping down a tree). In the 4 or 5 hours i used my YCS I have never experienced so much performance out of blade with so little shock or recoil to my arm and hand. One could argue that it was due to the fact that i paid $225 for it and i WANT it to be the best because it cost so much. That might be the case, but i know when i woke up monday after using all day sunday that i was not as sore as i usually am after a khuk workout nor did i have a single blister on my hand. I am a man of science and reason, but even those of us that "understand" how the world "works", have to give in when we've met our match. The kumar YCS that i have is magic. Not magic like a card trick and not magic like a romantic evening with the love of your life. Magic in the sense that it transends space, time, and the cosmos. Magic like the keris that rattle in their scabbards when their owner is in danger. I can feel it. Its not a warm, fuzzy feeling either. I feel that i should respect this blade above all others. very powerful. When you guys get yours, you'll see;) Just don't use it, or it will own you;)

Great. Well, that settles it. I'll have to get TWO.

One to use. One to not use.

And that was some persuasive writing- it sold me. I can get you a copy writer's job here at the ad agency, if you're interested....

Here's the checkerboard version:
  • 17.5"
  • Hibaki bolster
  • Tang not pinned
  • USA wood (?)
  • About 26-27 oz
Did I say, "I love it!" Kudos to Dan for allowing me to get in on the 1st run, to Yvsa for a great design, to Sher for his artistry, and to UB for attemping a special run like this. A YCS and a Gelbu in the same week! WOW!

Guys as much as I love hearing all the praise about the design of the YCS I can't really take credit for the khukuri. That design was taken from hundreds of years of know how and what a khukuri could be. All I did was put several options together to come up with the khukuri.:D
Now the kardas and awl I have to take responsibility for.;) :o
The main purpose of the YCS design was to have a rig that would handle all the necessary sharp instruments a man needs for hunting deer, mostly, but believe it will handle just about anything on the North American Continent.:D

"my weigh" makes some great scales, at pretty high lbs ratings too

i have the ultra-ship ultra-30 (30lbs) that i got for around pretty cheap on ebay... has a a gram, lb/oz, kg and lb feature...

Thanks a Million John!!!!:D
That gives me further encouragement that the Special Foxy Folly run at 17" will come in at least at 28 ounces or 1 pound 12 ounces. Somewhat heavier than what some guys are wanting but an ideal weight, according to Munk's figures on his thinking what the kami's thinking is an ideal weight, since a majority of the HI Khukuri's come in at that weight.:D

Yvsa, the extra weight must obviously be because of the chiruwa tang. My checkerboard is 18.25" and weighs in at exactly 27 ounces. Looks like the chiruwa tang is adding about 8 ounces on average, which is to be expected. With the standard tang though, mine seems to balance very nicely with a "blade forward" feel to it that I really like. YMMV.

I think your guess as to the weight of the FF is probably right on. 1" less about than my YCS, but about the same weight with that beefy blade.

Best Regards,

Norm

norm....I'm detecting some fuzzy math....help me out here. Is your new YCS really 8 oz. heavier than your old one?

The YCS is around 26-29 oz on average, whether stick or chiruwa tang. True, the chiruwa adds steel, but it also takes away handle material. ;)

Dan,

No, I only have one YCS, unfortunately! I was comparing my 18.25" 27 oz. std. handle checkerboard YCS to the weights given by JS for his purpleheart and sandalwood copies with the chiruwa tang, and those were 36 and 34 ounces respectively. So, one of his knives is 7 ounces heavier than my checkerboard with the stick tang and the other 9 ounces heavier. That's why I averaged 8 ounces in my note to Yvsa, and can only assume the chiruwa handle is the difference. I know from my own experience that the chiruwa handle does balance the knife towards the rear more because of the extra weight of the tang.

My checkerboard 27 oz. weight is also duplicated by Rio Jim for his knife in this thread.

Thanks,

Norm

whoopsie....must've missed that one. That's probably from the extra inch and wider belly. 8 oz....that's significant.

My very early Sanu YCS is 17 1/4 inches and weighs exactly 28oz.
The belly is 2 1/2 inches at its widest spot.
This slightly heavier and longer YCS sounds good.
I hope I get a sexy antler or horn one in soon! ;) :D
