Old pine for knife handles

Thank you. I try to help as much as I can. Got a few knives under my belt nowadays. Made most of the mistakes a guy can make. Still ain't made an absolutely perfect one yet but I keep trying. Even more sheaths so the offer, A Atmotech extends there too! We have a subsection here on BF called Sheaths and Such and I help out there often with the leather working questions.
Hey! As it so happens, I just bought some stuff to start making some basic sheaths! That should be a big help….

You have got some great advice from some great guys. Don’t forget to post a picture of the door.
I’m gonna post a picture of ”The Door” before I disassemble it. It was the main entrance door to his home. I remember spending the night when it was cold outside and he would stoke the old pot-bellied stove up until it glowed orange. He had cardboard tacked up all over the walls and ceiling’s to keep the draft out.
Surprised the place didn’t burn down around our ears. 😂

That resembles the door of the old cabin we used for deer season when I was a kid. And the old stove when they got it heated up would just about run you outta the cabin back into the snow.

Looks like a good way to put it to use.

Very nice old one. I see it is BOARD & BATTEN construction. In this case forget what I wrote earlier about disassembling. 🤭 Rather, simply cross cut the vertical boards on either side of the battens and toss out the battens. No useful lumber there with all those clinched nails. Plenty of good wood on either side.
Wort saving that lumber. 👍

By my reckoning, there’s about a hundred nails holding that door together 😕

Aren't the nails only though the cross boards, aka, the battens? I'm saying to cut on either side of those nailed cross boards and just save the vertical planks. There might be something I am not seeing. Sorry if I am being dense.

As some others have said the pine you'll probably have will be of excellent quality compared to today's pine used (in general). As an ex carpenter older pine used for stairs, floors etc... was/is excellent stuff. It won't need stabilising and pure tung oil would be an excellent finish re creating a durable handle.

You probably have the easiest solution. But i , being a hard headed old fart, am going to expend an hour or two yanking on nails before I cut the battens out. It drives my wife crazy! Bahahaha!
