Old Pocketknives vs.Modern pocketknives.

I'll take the OLD pocketknives!! If the Case collectors want to scream & yell....go right ahead....I'll take the OLD Case knives! I know,I know....be more specific...ok...fit & finish....& stee OLD is superiorl!I've stated this in the past.....just reaffermed it today.Going to BLADE next month.....while others are oohing & ahhing over the new stuff ... I'm gonna be looking for the OLD stuff

After all the harumphing subsides, get yourself a Great Eastern Cutlery knife. Mighty fine, old school craftsmanship and carbon steel.

I'm with the op on the old stuff with slip joints it just has a story and and a soul that makes you wonder what all that knife has seen. I have some old Waterville and ixl knives that where around during the civil war just think about it . Those were bought buy someone riding up to a old store on horseback . I love the history and the quality of the old stuff and don't even get me started on the green bone circle c case knives and that worm groove bone cattaragus used . Also just compare a old buck creek to a new one or a voss h&r to a new one or a 3eye brand to a new one I can go on and on .

I will say I just bought my first northwoods knife about a month ago and it blows away new case stuff and I have a red stag numbered gec muskrat from 07 on the way so that goes to show there are some nice new stuff out there without going full custom.

I like old knives.

new knives just seem kind of bland to me.. thicker grinds, flatter bolsters and scales, ugly bone, I could go on... ;)

After reading all the other posts and giving it some thought, I'm going to have to agree that some of the old models were really clunkers, along with many of the newly made models as well. One reason this forum is fun as it is just a treasure trove of information free for the taking. You can ask a question on just about any traditional model knife from the way back machine, up to ones that aren't even released yet and usually within minutes, you've your answer. Amazing. A great resource to use if you're considering a purchase - old or new. If it is just a dog of a knife, you'll find out.

There is one thing inescapable about the fact that, materials old, or materials new, there is a timeless charm to these traditional knives. The trouble is few are willing to separate sentimentality from fact. What is the meaning of superior made? Does this consist of higher quality materials, superior mass production, hand crafted old world techniques?
