jackknife...

As I said I had just read or reread all of the stories in the archive link just prior to finding the "Knife". It was in such sad shape when I picked it up and rubbed off the shield I knew it had to be an Imperial...or at best an Ulster. When I got the main opened far enough to use the corner of a handkerchief to expose the top of the circle of the tang stamp my thoughts were filled with my minds image of Mr Van. The first thing that flashed through my mind was an image of a Scout standing in front of Mr Van being drummed out of the Troop ala the TV show "Branded"

When I got home I grabbed a toothbrush from my gun cleaning supplies and attacked the tang and slowly the the stamp was revealed. I could see the block lettering and it seemed the "Remington" wasn't centered and sure enough more scrubbing revealed the "UMC" under it. I knew then and there my knife had to be kin to Mr Van's. As I cleaned the knife I remembered each story you told us of Mr Van. I know this isn't up to Mr Van's standards of cleanliness but without removing metal I don't think I can do much more and I am loath to do that. I hope Mr Van will take that into consideration when role is called and inspection held in the hereafter.

Carried it again today and got several comments on it...I wonder where i can find one of the old belt clips...

I wonder where my old Totin' and Chip Card went...don't want to get in trouble...lol.

But it wouldn't have the Scout emblem on it...smiles. This has been in my hands a lot these past couple of days, I must of opened and closed the main a couple hundred times and it feels like the rust has about gone from the joint. It is starting to snap open and closed with good authority now...that nice loud clunk sound that let's you know you opened a good knife.

It has also brought back memories of the Klondikes I went to, making and dragging that sled all over the camp grounds and earning "gold" nuggets. Making Bisquick pan bread and mulligan stew with some true mystery meat. Meeting and learning Morse Code, learning knots, winning my marksmanship badge. And who would have thought I could swim a mile...lol.

If you still have your Scout knife get it out and carry it a few days...the memories it brings back that have been forgotten are great.

When were you in? I just might have the right one lying around. Know if yours was a First Class or Tenderfoot emblem?

Awesome....doesn't get much better! Glad to see such a treasure saved....and the stories it could likely tell.

Thanks for sharing, something about a scout knife that tugs at most of us.

Ken

I'm in total agreement here. Probably for a lot of us, the scout knife was our first knife and there are so many memories associated with being in the scouts as a young lad.
