Old School SHBM and SHSHII

I was able to pick up two old school INFI blades...SHBM and SHSHII from a kind Hog. I have two q's.

1. I noticed a different grind on the edges of the blade. Each blade has one side which has a much steeper grind than the other side. The seller (left un-named) said he believed that Jerry was working on some different grinds to help the user to simply strop or sharpen one side. Is this accurate, and if so, did Jerry's experiment work out? I wonder because this blade will be a user, not a profit maker. I was wondering if it is better to reprofile the blade to have even grind sides.

2. I noticed that the coating is not on the spine of the handle, but it is on the sides of the butt of the handle. Is there some beneficial purpose to this...or just the style?

I appreciate any input you older hogs can provide. I love the blades, but jus had a few q's on them. Thanks a million for the help. Here are the pics.

Asymmetric grind. Try it for awhile, see if you like it.

That other thing? Style points.

I have a slotted bolt shsh11 and the edge on it is the same on both sides. But the handle top and bottom are uncoated the rest of the knife is coated even the butt. Thats about all I can tell you on this one. Hope this helps alittle.

I had atleast one Busse with the asymmetrical grind. It works really well and it's easy to sharpen. It's not as good as full convex zero edge though.

Definitely an asymmetrical edge.

Supposedly, this edge maintains it sharpness longer than a V ground edge,
and as pointed out ealier... is easier to maintain.
There is a speciific method to maintaining an Asymmetric edge...
something about only stropping or sharpening one of the sides.
IIRC it's the short side (less of a bevel) but can't remember.

At the time of the BM release he was testing and playing around with different edges....

Here's the ASG artical BM which he asked Ron Hood to test...
And asymmetrical convex edge.

Not sure if you can see it, but this is the side with very little edge grind...

Something else to note... the asymmetric edge is specific to left handed and right handed use.
Yours, and most all for that matter, are for right handed use.

As for the bare metal around the handle...
The blades are coated then the slabs are put on, then a final touch to the grinder for a perfect fit.

Like OP said, try it for a while.

What the others failed to say (and shame on them for not helping you out) is that those "uneven" edges have since been proven to be not only a bad idea, but totally unsafe. There have been at least 13 recorded deaths from using them. For safety's sake, box them up and send them to me for proper evaluation. They may have to be destroyed.

And if you happen to see me suddenly posting pics of using and enjoying these beauties.........ignore them. Congrats on the score!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on the finds!

They are an assymetrical grind. Give them a try, they are actually quite easy to maintain, don't let them intimidate you. Reprofiling them will do nothing to make them "better". They are an excellent style of edge. Use them and be happy:D
As you can see in Foo's pics, if you decide to sharpen the steep side on a slack belt or abrasive surface with some give, it can develop into a sleek assymetrical convex edge...very slick and easy to maintain.

The edges of the handle were "skinned" to marry the Micarta to the tang (finer fit/finish).

Whatever you do....keep the edge, grind it to a V, strop it convex, or run em dull.....Don't Freaking Sell Them! Ever!

Old School Straight Handle INFI is the Rock of all Busses!

Congrats bro.

I appreciate the additional input fellas. I'll keep the safety issue in mind and you may end up with a surprise package bigfattyt:)
