Old stag at a biker bar.

Great story:thumbup: - you made me start to really miss my old '70 P125 *sniff*. I remember being nervous the first time I came across some bikers while on my Vespa but my experience turned out similar to yours - very welcoming with some good natured ribbing thrown in (a couple of the guys even admitted to having soft spots for Cushmans as well).

All I can see right now is a 1966 creamsickle orange electraglide. Mmmm, nice.

Jacknife,

Thank you for the tale, good writing! This almost seems to be the knife you are speaking of, although this one is in Damascus as a limited edition Black Forest Knives (from Explorer) with a quote from the catalog “Masterfully handcrafted by skilled Solingen cutlers”. I bought this for myself when I was a Puma dealer in the 1980’s. Retail 1988 on this one was $200.00

Question: Could Explorer have contracted these expensive knives out to Hen & Rooster (Bertram)? I had never made this connection until your post.

The Black Forest series had six non-Damascus folders with high-carbon steel, mirror polished blades & three Damascus folders. These have nickel silver bolsters & Sambar stag or hand selected genuine mother of pearl scales. Shields were on the stag knives only.

Could the one you held have been marked 10-126 on the spey blade?

That one looks very much like the one.

I don't know when Bertram went out/got bought out. I do know that the Hen and Roster name is not anywhere near the knives of the old Bertram marked H&R's.

I believe A.G.Russell owned Bertram from 1975-1980, after which it went bankrupt and the name was sold to someone else who puts it on inferior knives. For more info on them and that Explorer, check with the Bernard Levine forum. More great writing, Jacknife! I rode my first bike in '57, a 45 inch Harley army model. The guy wanted 75 bucks for it, too much for a 17 year old kid whose only income was working in hay fields and tobacco fields. Didn't get to own one until '61. I still own a bike today, but don't ride much anymore. My first wife owned a Vespa.
