SK-5 carbon steel. n-i-c-e !!! very n-i-c-e !!!
Here's a tidbit from my old old archives:
SOG SK-5: "I've been told that the SK-5 we use (most likely a Japanese made steel) is very close to 0-1." -- Ron Andersen
O-1. This is a steel very popular with forgers, as it has the reputation for being "forgiving". It is an excellent steel, that takes and holds an edge superbly, and is very tough. It rusts easily, however. Randall Knives uses O-1, so does Mad Dog.
0-1 Properties

I will personally attest to the "take and hold an edge" characteristic. My SK-5 SOG's Tigershark and Bowie do exactly that: take and hold an awesome razor edge.
A couple of weeks ago a pal sent me a SOG Bowie to play around with, and that knife was even sharper than my own SOG Bowie. SK-5 definitely "takes and holds."
To keep rust/corrosion under control, I blued the blade of my Tigershark. And I ruined the bluing of my Bowie and now keep that bluing touched-up.
Cheers,
Carl
