Right, so I got this ugly bugger at a garage sale when I was 14. Nondescript toolbox, no idea what brand or age. I'm looking to turn this thing into a forge with a little refractory cement and a few feet of steel pipe. I don't wanna get killed by this hobby, so I want to know what the chances are that this thing is galvanized steel. I knocked a bit of that paint off and sanded it, and it doesn't look like it's hot-dipped. It's about 1/32 inches thick.

Thanks!

Get yourself an empty freon tank, old propane tank.

If it was galvanized it wouldn't kill you ( mostly an internet falsehood), but there are far better choices than a box. Any round tube is a good choice.

A trip to the scrap yard will turn up many suspects:
Old water heater tank
stove pipe
8-10" pipe
any tank or tube the right diameter.
old oxygen tank
old propane tank
old air tank
old freon tank

if you cant find anything Stacy mentioned, you could just go to the hardware store and get some sheet metal. I got a 2'x3' peice for about $25, and it is really easy to drill holes in and cut, and i didnt have to spend much time chasing it down

I'm making a little coal forge for HT my 1080 blade from an old 6 quart pot (spaghetti pot) with a hole drilled in the side, a pipe inserted with holes drilled for airflow and using a shopvac blower...cost me a grand total of like $2.00 so far (for the pot at a yardsale) since I already had the rest. Anything could work if you're trying hard enough!

That tool box would work great. you do what you can with what you got don't let anyone steer you otherwise.
