Old west folders

Some of those catalog knife descriptions are funny.
Read the Maher and Grosh No.59. "The large class of idiots who worship everything English would think this knife cheap at $1.50 if it had been imported, but no English knife was ever made where the blades are so uniformly good and so carefully tested." :D

Advertising hype and utter BS has been with us always -- especially amusing in this case since in this time period, the great majority of skilled cutlers working in America were from Sheffield (with the remainder of the skilled cutlers from Germany).

Cool catalog pages and some nice knives too. Most of the knives offered ebony as a handle material. The one Mike posted offered Cocoa wood.....Cocobola?

Yes, cocoa=cocobolo.

I would love to be able to get in a time machine and visit a well-stocked hardware store.

Great pages!

What is interesting is the majority of the blades are Spear, with just a few clip blades
How fashion has changed...

In Clint Eastwoods movie "The Outlaw Josie Wales" he uses a jack. I haven't pinpointed it but he used it a few times during the movie. looks like a regular jack or trapper.

In the few museums I've been to out west, like the Baca House in Trinidad, and a few others, I noticed the same thing. Mostly spear point two blade jacks of some sort, seemed to be the overwhelming choice of pocket knife.

Food for thought there.

Carl, I believe you are talking about Trinidad Colorado, and was wondering if you could elaborate on the Baca House and the Museum. Are they one in the same. I love that area of Southern Colorado, San Juans, Narrow Gauge history, etc. Magical region of the US for Western/Spanish History. Still trying to squeeze in a trip out there this summer. I recall you had a link to that part of Colorado (a great stockman story).

The Baca house is a old hstoric home that was built by the Baca family, one of the first residents of Trinidad Colorado. It's perfectly restored with all original type furnishings to 1870's era. Out back, the carridge house has been turned into a museum, with display cases of artifacts from that era, to include the badge and a Colt revolver used by the first police chief, Bat Masterson.

Just an hour and a half up the road by LaJunta, is Bents Old Fort. A really great place to spend a few hours looking at life in the fur trade era.

I lived in Trinidad for a couple of years in the late 70's. It was nice, but I missed the sound of seagulls, and the eastern hardwood forest. Just too open out there. No place to go sailing either.:D

I love the line, "Blades are as carefully forged as a $2 razor." I guess that line wouldn't work in today's economy, huh? :D

Well, it might as long as it came with this image as a disclaimer:

:p

Also amusing is the wording from the prepare for Christmas page:

Talking of a CONGRESS knife named 'Old Solid Comfort' apparently it is "Made for Service, not for Beauty" :D Right...the knife maybe..

Stag handle 1.50. "We will gladly give 10.00 for one with a soft blade" That's confidence in the product, must ask CASE,Queen,GEC, Canal St. etc if they'd do the same these days:D

Really beautiful patterns in these catalogue pages, so lucky to see them all.

This is a nice thread. I hope the powers that be might consider making it a Sticky. The catalog page scans are a GREAT reference.

Dave, tell you what I'll do. I'll open up a thread for "Vintage Knife Catalogs" only.
No chat, no photos, no discussion, just the catalogs.

Anybody who wishes to add the previously posted catalogs can do so.
(You can edit your posts with the catalog pages, copy the links and then paste them in the new thread.)

Also, anybody that wishes to add new material may do so as well.

Since Gus hates "stickies" in general, I'll discuss with him making a sticky but something else may have to go so as not to clutter up the page too much.

Fair enough? (I think that should add something to the forum.)

That's perfect!

I wasn't aware that Stickies were 'frowned upon', but now that you mention it, it's understandable that we don't want too many of 'em 'stuck' at the top of the page. Makes perfect sense.

Thank you Sir!

They're not Dave, but everyone has their preferences in how they maintain a forum. That's one of Gus' pet peeves but he's also very flexible. So we'll see how it goes. Go have a look and see what you think so far.

And you're very welcome. :thumbup::cool:
