I just received this 1. T. W. Ablett out of shefield. I've wanted 1 of Trevor's knives for awhile, as he is 1 of the last handmade maker's out of Shefield.

It's an Ettrick pattern, whith wharnie & peach pruner blades, made popular around the English scottish border.
Carbon blades, brass bolsters & liners & buffalo scales. I'm happy with it, blades came sharp, scales & bolsters chamfored so no sharp edges I do like he has used a full 3rd liner to sperate blades. Blades mirror polished. There are some blemishes, a couple rough marks where bolsters meet liners, could have been buffed a bit more a few marks on the ricasso's. Walk & talk is good. If it was a high end knife I might be dissapointed but as Trevor makes his knives to be used & as they run around a $100 for a handmade knife:thumbup: I can see why this became a popular pattern, feels good in the hand & screaming to be used. I've never had a folding pruner before so I'm looking forward to slipping it in the pocket:D
This is the first time it's been an advantage being an Aussie knife enthusiast. An Aussie dealer had some in stock:eek:
cheers
Mitch

Congrats on that fine knife, Mitch. I've had a couple of Trevor's knives that are now in the hands of a couple of good forum friends.

Enjoy it!

That's pretty neat Mitch  Looks handy.

Something that makes me curious is: why do just about all modern English hand made traditional patterns have brass bolsters? In the old days the bolsters of English made knives were either iron or nickel silver -- almost never brass. Why the change? On one hand it makes it very easy to tell a modern one from an antique, but I just don't see why they would ever change -- these are some of the most total traditionalists you'll ever find after all.

I've been wondering the same thing about those brass bolsters. Can't find genuine old Sheffields with them, so far.

Are they copying Buck belatedly:D Or is it a saving on nickel plating ? It's a valid question.

Although I said "almost never brass" above, I really cannot think of one single example of a genuine antique English knife having brass bolsters -- unless you can find some with a full cast brass one piece scale and bolster. I've even got a number of examples where the cutlers would taper the brass liners and nickel silver bolsters so that the brass liners do not reach the end of the knife, so as not to disrupt the consistent presentation of the nickel silver bolsters. So the change seems very odd to me.

Congratulations Mitch that looks a beauty.

I was lucky enough to take a tour of Trevors shop a coupla years ago. One of the few remaining makers of traditional knives in Sheffield, he had some stories to tell...It's amazing how he turns those knives out. He mentioned that most of his knives go to Oz, the ranchers love 'em. I took a few pics while i was there, thought you might like to see.

That's Trevor in the blue overalls. The guy standing right behind him is Russell White of Taylors Eye Witness who organised the visit. Thanks again Russ.
