Four days ago, I purchased this old 110 and the right hand stamp is a first for me. I have two different data sheets on 110's and one (Joe's) says it's a Third Version, Var. 9 and the other says Third Version, Var. 7.

"Third Version, Integral Brass Spacer/Spring holder, 9 variations

Variation 9 (1968-1970)14
Stamp: BUCK, u.s.a., Inverted, Right hand, 440C steel.
Blade/Butt rivets: Visible on both sides of bolsters, 2 rear, 1 front.
Inlay rivets: 2 (tiny)
Rocker rivet: Brass, maybe headed.
Sheath: Leather, black. B or C.
Packaging: 2 piece yellow box about 2” high-(1), Use and Care leaflet undated-(1), “Attention” leaflet orange-(1), **
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

-two liner(reads tip down)
-semi-hollow ground blades

7th VARIATION

• identical to 6th variation, except right side of blade has BUCK, U.S.A.[two liner] stamped on tang which reads tip down
"

Which is correct? At any rate, the knife is in really nice shape and no blade play at all in any direction. It came with what I believe is the correct sheath, although it's in near mint condition and may not be original to the knife.

So, were there 9 variations or only 7?

Yes, it used to be a seven and as I understand it, a couple new variations were added to Joe's list and it became a nine.

Those variations never got added to that other list (which is also an excellent list).

I have its twin......have had it for quite a few years. Your blade may be a little nicer.

You got a good deal!

:)

As for the sheath, it should be a little slimmer than those that are a few years newer and it should probably have the "110" just above the belt loop rather than below.

During that time period there were many, many odd knives made......and some of our "experts" differed on whether or not some variations were legitimate variations......which is why some lists differ on those Third Versions from 68-69.

I don't think anybody can say for sure who (if anybody) is right.

Unlike all our other issues.

:D

The Variation 7 and Variation 9 are the same. There used to be a 110 data sheet (2007) posted that gave 7 variations for the 3rd Version, then a revised data sheet was posted (2009) with 9 variations. Both data sheets are Joe's. In the 2009 data sheet, Variations 5 and 6 are new. The result is that v7 (2009) is equivalent to v5 (2007), v8 (2009) is equivalent to v6 (2007), and v9 (2009) is equivalent to v7 (2007). That's probably clear as mud unless you compare the information from the 2 data sheets.

Well, Bertl.......that's muddy, but that's correct as far as I know except that we need to specify that V7 and V9 are the same only in that what WAS V7 is NOW V9 keeping in mind that there is a new V7.

Am I getting that???

:D

Also, there actually is a third list that is highly regarded.

BG

I thought my next to last (penultimate) sentence clarified the V7 V9 question.

If the equivalents from the two lists in question aren't confusing enough, we could add the equivalents from George Stinzel's classification, which is quite different but also quite good.

Dave, could you put up a pic of the sheath it came with please.

I finally found this one like yours and it didn't come with a sheath, but I have several empty sheaths and I believe I have a correct one.

110 above the loop and scoop cut pocket. One line Buck, silver snap

Thx

OOPS!!
This is not the correct sheath. Loose and floppy in it. Dug out one of the thinner sheaths and it works, but it is occupied :)

So Pack Rat.......you have one of the slightly wider sheaths that still has the 110 above the belt loop.

There probably aren't a lot of those around.

Unless it just got stretched out by a bigger knife or something.

Is your 110 a right-side stamp like Dave's?

Knife is just like the one Dave posted.

Actually I have two of those sheaths laying here. Both the same with this knife in it.

The sheath that does fit, has the 110 stamped on the loop and is high cut, with little of that knife showing and is thinner, as these knives are thinner. It has a two line inverted in it and I'm pretty sure it is correct, as thats how it came.

Stamped ON the loop?

Don't have one of those. :(

I have that knife (right side inverted stamp) and the sheath that came with it new is slightly narrower that those that came along a few years after that and has the 110 stamped above the belt loop and has the scoop cut pocket.

Nice looking knife Dave. I apologize for my misjudgement from the small pictures on my phone!

As to the question of the sheath for the knife in question.....here's a thread with some great pics of old sheaths.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/817426-Old-Buck-110-leather-sheath

I think your sheath is discussed there, Packrat.....by you. :) Looks like it's an Atchison. Only one I ever saw!

You got a rare sheath there.

Strangely enough, nobody (including me) noticed or mentioned it at that time!

:)

BTW.......that thread is rich with sheath info and well worth saving.

I'll take some pictures later when I get time. I have three of the cutdownpouch sheaths set out and all three are a bit different. I do have one that came with a for sure (using Joe's chart) 3rd.Ver., Var. 7 that has the model number above the belt loop and no rivets holding the pouch to the back of the sheath, just stitched.

Here's the sheath for my Third Version Ninth Variation (just like PDs 110 inverted right-side stamp).

This measures slightly less than two inches across the top as compared to 2 1/8 inches on a Two-Dotter sheath.

These were late '68 to '69 (well, mine was, anyhow).
