Hi all,I'm hoping someone can give me some info on Estwing hatchets.Back in the 90's I bought the E3-24A model with the blue nylon vinyl grip.On the side of the handle opposite the company name is marked "Warning-wear safety goggles"
Recently I picked up an older identical model that says "EverGrip" where today's goggle warning is.Other than this, the only difference is , it has the notch at the bottom of the blade like the new smaller leather handle one has.
A very big difference between the old model & the newer one is in the steel. The older one is MUCH harder & rings when tapped with anything metal, while the newer ones tend to go "thunk".Using a file really shows this hardness difference. It is really tough to file.
Of all the newer Estwings I have, none are this hard.I'm wondering if the older ones are that much harder or if I just got one that received a harder heat treat.
Do any of you have any of the old ones? And can you tell me if they do have better steel than the current models? Thanks for any info you can provide.
