I just purchased an older sebenza and was debating whether or not to send it in to CRK for spa treatment. It is a 97 large regular seb in BG42. Thoughts? I was wondering if fixing it up would in some way take away from the old school coolness of it. The blade is fine. I would just be refurbing the slabs.

Sebenzas look better with scratches and signs of use. As long as it is smooth and locks up good then I wouldn't send it in.

i also prefer the scales with some character.

if the edge is good, and you plan on carrying it, the spa treatment is a waste of money.

I'm 50/50 on this. One part says leave it because it's kind of broken in but at the same time I think sending it in for a face lift and then making your own marks is good. Basically making the knife yours.
I'm in the same boat. Several months back I bought a large classic with BG42 and it has a nice worn look. Feels great in the hand but I want my hands to make it customized so to speak. I've debated on sending it in at least to have silver thumbstud and silver backspacers installed. I'm not too keen on the anodized blue stud and spacers.
Either way there isn't a bad decision.

I sent a small Seb regular BG-42 in because I wanted it double-lugged and it needed some pivot attention. CRK had to refinish the scales after fitting it for double lugs so I lost all the wear & tear on the scales. :( On the other hand, the knife is back to spec and better because of the double lugs...also had the new washers and pivot installed, so it's functionally like a new knife. All in all, I feel very good about it and would do it again, even with the trade-off on the signs of honest use. YMMV...

If it is working as it should leave it be , you cannot replace patina on any knife and the slabs just tell its story so far.

I think the crk knives look much better with some wear on the handles. If it's going to be a safe queen to just admire then you might want to make look new.

Thanks for all the replies. I think Ill probably stick with it as it is. I like the feel of it and I can add to the scratches over time to make it more mine. I love how smooth it opens!

I wouldn't send it in just to refurb it unless you really want to. I wanted some functional upgrades, and that couldn't be done without refinishing the scales, so I really came at it from the other end of things and am happy with my choice.

One of my Small 21's was scratched up, and I used Wet-Or-Dry sandpaper (400, 800, and 1,000 grit) to clean up the slabs myself:

Just another option for you if you don't mind disassembling the knife yourself (it's very easy).

I like that option alot! hmmmmmmm...

I had CRK do a refurb on a small regular Seb and the knife came back looking brand new.

However, after a couple months of carrying and using it it looked just like it did before the refurb.

So, I wouldn't bother with refurb on a knife you're going to use.

I could see doing it on a knife you plan to give as a gift, maybe.

Normal use will wear the blue off. You can save yourself a bit of scratch and the next time you disassemble it, hit the blue with some steel wool.

Let me rephrase. I want to send it in to have a double thumb stud installed.

Been there, done that, very happy with the results. CRK told me that they had to recontour the off-side slab for access to the off-side lug and therefore had to refinish the slabs. It's fine...it starts looking worn again pretty quickly. ;) Get the new washers and pivot when you send it in, if you do.

Will they automatically install the new washers and pivot without being asked?
I think they will on the washers but not sure about the pivot.
