Older Sebenza question

Will they automatically install the new washers and pivot without being asked?
I think they will on the washers but not sure about the pivot.

No, you have to pay for the new washers and a new pivot bushing. I think t he total is like 6 or 7 bucks so no big deal.

What I ran into with the older (1997) knife was that the washers were free or so close it didn't matter, but the pivot had to be replaced, so there was a charge.

Now that is certainly a must!! Dual thumb studs is the only way to go!!!

I'd suggest that the OP refrain from getting the dual thumbstuds. I have them on my large Regular and any Sebenza I order will have them. But I wouldn't take the risk with a BG-42 blade. Taking out the original single thumbstud can result in a cracked blade. CRK will replace the blade of course, but you'll have a S30V blade instead of the BG-42.

I had concerns about this and talked to CRK at length about this before I did it. The bottom line is that it is not a concern at this time. If you are interested in the background and reasons why this should not stop anyone from having a BG-42 blade re-lugged, you should talk to CRK about it. I believe they will put your mind 100% at rest on this being a non-issue.

Sounds like a question that needs to get asked, unless you'd care to elaborate ;)

For my part, there is the argument for getting the handles refinished in that any future scratches will be YOUR scratches, not someone elses. Part of the whole "taking ownership" thing.

Also, you might consider that if you do have CR do a blade refinish on your knife, you're going to get new style thumbstuds. CR changed from the original style in '96, and then made a small modification in '97. If you have a stud with a base, a peak, and 3 layers in between then it's one of the early regular styles and I wouldn't change it (call me nostalgic). If it has a base, a peak and two middle layers, then it is the same as the current versions.

And pictures, please! It's part of the cost of joining.

I don't want to retell half the story, or accidentally omit some part of what I was told. :) There is more than enough misinformation and incomplete information out here without my contributing to it. ;) The bottom line is that if you are considering sending a knife in to CRK you are going to have to have some kind of conversation with them about the scope of the work and your approval for the work, and that's the right time to ask about BG-42 blades and new lugs (any new lug, btw, not just double lugs). I think that anyone who does this will conclude it is a non-issue.

but why would the pivot need replacing?

They put a new bushing in with the new washers.

I would send it in to get it tuned up, and maybe touch up the edge. I wouldn't blast the scales and tumble the blade though.

Agree on the scales but if you have an older regular DL'd, they need to refinish the scale where they make a relief cut for the added lug. I supose you could ask to have only that scale refinished...

Yeah, if you double lug it they have to reblast the scales. The answer is don't double lug! :)

Fair enough. I don't have any older Regulars that I want to add double lugs to or refinish the blade on (yet), so that conversation will wait for another day. I understand that CR keeps a stash of old parts for warranty repairs, so it isn't inconceivable that there are a few BG42 blades are lying about, just in case.

I asked about that - I was told there are no spare BG-42 blades left for warranty/repair purposes. If it is talked through with CRK, I believe nearly anyone would conclude it is not an appreciable risk at this point.

I thought I'd joined a long time ago ;) but here are some pics of the 1997 small regular LH Sebenza after it returned from CRK with double lugs, the new washers/pivot, and a general tune-up. I added the lanyard afterwards as a sort of homecoming gift. :D

IIRC, they replaced the existing lanyards with new black nylon ones. The one in the pictures is from a 3rd party vendor that does special orders from CRK.
