That's carpet beetle damage, which means the handle scales are cattle horn. T-A

Thank you, I forgot about hearing of that. Now I have a knife with horn handles!

Now I don’t feel so bad about not figuring out what kind of wood it was! Didn’t realize the grain was so similar. I’ve heard about horn shrinking but these handles are still very well fit.
