Omega springs?

I understand that Benchmade has a policy for not sending out Omega springs.

Any chance we can get that changed? Spyderco, for instance, has no problem selling "internal parts".

It's silly.

I don't see that it's an issue. I have carried and heavily used Benchmade axis lock knives almost exclusively since they were invented and have never broken a spring. I know some people have, but sending it to Benchmade to have it fixed isn't a big deal and they'll sharpen it all up nice and put a new clip on for you and sometimes they even replace scales if they feel like it, and they do this all for free, all you pay is shipping.

If I were them I sure wouldn't want some punk kid with some torx he got for 89 cents at harbor frieght pulling a knife all apart. Aside from the fact that he's liable to wound himself, he's probably going to mess the screws all up and then send it in anyway and say what junk Benchmade screws are.

You may want to call them about that instead of starting a thread.

They've only been here a few hours, so it may not be a good idea to start asking for policy changes just yet.
We don't want to make them wish they hadn't started this forum on the first day:p

I can understand their policy on Omega springs, Benchmades aren't the easiest knives to take apart and repair yourself especially for someone who; A. Has minimal experience in taking apart knives and B. Doesn't have the proper tools to do it. It is an inconvenience for those of us who have no issues with replacing the springs by ourselves but I'm sure most folks can just cannibalize springs from other Benchmades if the need ever arises (and aren't afraid to void their warranties). I haven't had an issues with my springs breakage personally and I've been using a 940 for almost a year now.

Some Benchmades are hell to service yourself. I have a BM585 with the AXIS Assist and I took it apart to give it a proper cleaning. The guy who had it before me didn't know what knife care was. Anyhow, it took me over 3 hours to reassemble it and I can understand how frustrated BM must be when they get a shipment of knife parts in a box. I don't understand how one can break an omega spring.. I don't see how in the world. It might come out of the mount hole in the liner, but I cannot, at all, see how one can figure out a way to break an omega spring.

Paying for the shipping is a big deal to some people. Just shipping the knife out and not having it is a big deal to some people.

Meh... it's one of the longest running thread topics on Benchmades company forum. I would like to hear other owners opinions. The hardcore fans want em. Just sayin... :o

Edit- btw, my guess is that Ryan got a little heads up on what to expect from us monkeys. :)

Just get a supply of steel guitar strings and you can make your own Omega Springs.

One of my favorite topics, would be nice if BM made them available, but in over a decade of use, I have yet to break one... the same can't be said for coil springs. Those I can order online, skip any ID crap and going through a dealer.

I haven't made replacement Omega springs, maybe one day when I grow a wild hair.

Regular knives are easy to take apart and put back together, automatic OTS are easy, I haven't played with an OTF, assisted are slightly harder to reassemble.

Benchmade's policy, which remains, is they won't send parts, other than clip and screw sets by request. They have made exceptions to the rule, but some of these are fans in other countries that would preclude shipping the knife to Oregon City. For direct questions which completely bypass rumors and hearsay, it's always best to give them a call at 800-800-7427 and ask for Customer Service.

The only real problem with sending it in is for people living outside the US with finicky Customs inspectors.

+1 customer support is great.

For the record, Benchmade has been exceedingly kind to me and I have nothing but respect for them. The only other company that has come close to their level of CS is SOG. Also, I've never had a problem with Omega springs or any other parts. Especially the free deep carry pocket clip they sent me for my Rift. ;)

This will be off topic, but since the topic has been covered it might not matter.

Is that the same clip as on a 275 adamas? It looks the same, but I don't know if the screw holes fit.

Yeah, same as the Adamas and Contego.

Yeah, same as the Adamas and Contego.

The clips are the same except for the screw hole sizes. The 275 uses larger screws in the clip and therefore a 275 clip will have larger diamter holes than the 810 clip. A 275 clip will work other knifes, but an 810 clip will not go on the 275 without drilling the holes larger.

We are not able to send out any internal components of our knives which includes our Omega Springs. I understand that it is an inconvenience for many people to have to send their knives in when a problem occurs but the omega springs we use have proven to be extremely durable. In fact other than the rare random breaks that can occur with all metals the only time we see bad springs is when they are improperly maintained.

As for the 275 clip, please be aware that the 275 and 810 clips while they look similar have different hole diameters on for the clip screws. The 275 is larger than the 810.

Thanks for the reply. Although I said in an above post that a "guitar string" (High E unwound) could be used to make a replacement omega spring, I have never had an omega spring break (knock on wood) on one of my knives. The earliest knife I have with an axis lock is a 720 Pardue from about 14-years ago.

Hmmm....would that clip fit a Grip (or a Mini Grip)?
