OMG!!!! Benchmade 810 Contego

I finally decide to jump the gun after really handling the knife. I had been wanting to try one.
I got mine a little over a week ago. One of the Omega Springs for the axis got lost.
This knife still functions flawlessly.
I'm going to get the spring replaced at some point, but for now it's fine.
Extremely sharp, amazing steel, I like the ergos and the grip.
Currently, it's likely my favorite. =]

Anyone who has thought about getting one, should at least give it a try. I wasn't really interested in many BM's there for a while. Then I got this brute. =]

Go for it. I currently have two. One in each color. There is no clear ceracoat. Its a bead blasted look.
The only other knives I have duplicates of are the Rukus, Griptillians and the large and small Onslaughts.
(But they are different sizes so maybe they don't count.)

Anyway, its hard to pass these up for the price and quality.

I'll agree that the Contego seems perfect spec-wise and in pictures. I mean, big CPM-M4 reverse tanto blade, Axis lock, lots-o-jimping, crazy grippy G10, drilled out liners, deep carry clip. Seriously, what else could you really hope for at that price?

I won't say that the Contego doesn't live up to the expectations, but it just doesn't have the super solid feel that I get from some of my other knives (albeit, those are higher end knives). For instance, my Microtech Socom Delta feels tighter and more solid than the Contego but I also paid more than two times what I paid for my Contego. That being said, I think the Contego fits the bill very well for a knife at that particular price point. Something that I should note, however, is that my Contego came to me with a severely off-center blade (check the Benchmade subforum for pics). It's annoying to have to send a knife back but Benchmade is a high production company and is very helpful when it comes to their warranty (granted, I haven't gotten my Contego back yet).

All in all, I think it would make a good EDC knife or even work well for a light weight Mil/LEO duty knife. The extreme grip of the G10, aggressive jimping, and large choil almost suggest that it was designed for use with gloved hands. In fact, I'll probably bring it with me once I get deployed although I'm a bit weary of how corrosion resistant it will be. I don't think you can go wrong with the Contego, just be ready to have the pockets on your pants torn up by the G10.

I really it's a really nice knife, I think Benchmade did a great job on it...but...SO MUCH JIMPING. I feel like if I leave it in the case overnight with knives that don't have jimping they'll absorb some through osmosis. I always need more knives, but between the Contego and Manix 2 I don't think I will ever need more JIMPING.

Maxfactor, sucks you had to send it back, mine looked like yours, what I did was loosen all the screws, wedged a piece of folded paper between the blade and liner to make it even, then snugged the pivot down and the rest of the screws, now its perfectly centered.

...

My problem was the handles......First off, WAY TO MUCH aggressive gimping. It really is uncomfortable to hold. Secondly, that big half-moon cutout is just odd. It makes the blade feel like it is at a weird angle in the hand and made me feel like I couldn't get proper leverage when cutting. It also destroyed my pockets in my khakis and jeans.

Anyhow, YMMV. I know some folks love it. I know I'm going to love my CPM-M4, as it will have everything that I love about the 810, and nothing that I disliked.

Let us know what you think when you get it!

I pretty much agree with you and the rest of the people that have complained about the rough g10. For that reason alone I haven't even carried the knife yet.

I'm gonna keep it because I really really like the blade shape and size, one day I will sand it down real well or maybe get custom scales made.

Made in the USA , 4 inch 4mm thick cpm-m4 blade axis lock deep carry clip nothing at $140 comes even close to this knife.

I'm trying to imagine a more solid feeling knife, and I really can't. Thing is a beast.

I've actually got a couple of PMs about how I fixed the terribad clip, I just put on a standard Benchmade silver split arrow and drilled the G10 for the middle screw.

I thought I liked the Rift better, but after buying the 810 I don't know. That M4 sure is some steel. The jimping on mine was not sharp at all. someone said the BM had changed it where it was not near as aggressive it was when they first came out. I sure think it is a lot of knife for the money. I would think it would be tough as hell. I sure don't see anything weak on these knife.

The jimping on mine sure isn't sharp. Sure, there's a lot of it, but it's nicely rounded. Doesn't even bother my wife, and she has about the most feminine hands ever.
