ok guys, ive got another question, im getting an rc-5, my first rat!!!!! but ive been wondering, can you do small carving with it? i want to go backpacking with it as my only blade, and with a collapsable saw. and also , can you mount it horizontally on your belt? if so, could someone please put a picture on? thanks any answers and especially photos will be appreciated.

I wouldn't consider the 5 a carving knife by any stretch of the imagination. I'd hate to know I had to carve monkeys out of peach seeds with the RC-5.

It would be more like beating the tree into submission to produce a canoe.

Long story short: I don't think the RC-5 is a camping / carving knife.

I have the RC-5 Izula combo and I really like it.
I could also see liking a RC-6 and RC-3 combo...
or the RC-10 / RC-3 combo

Just remember this the RC-5 is NOT a fine cutting blade.
It is what it does best, all around survival blade.
It weighs as much as a small hatchet! and does 10 times the work!
Izula is one of the best carving, fine work knives I have seen.

since you have the rc5 inbound, if you can add an Izula to the mix and you'll be fine , I like the RC5 for the brute it is ,hacking ,chopping & use Izula for finer things

In the real world for what I do, I see no need for the RC-5. Obviously there are applications in the military world though.

That's interesting that you say that. I just purchased my first RAT a couple weeks ago, the H.E.S.T. from DPX gear. I haven't had a chance to use it much yet, but I love it. The RC-5 was going to be my first RAT knife, but I wanted to get my RAT Pack # in the H.E.S.T. while I could.

I'm now debating between the RC-5 and RC-6 for an outdoor knife. Either way, I'll be getting the Izula as well to accompany it; that's just a given.:p

I think the RC-6 will be plenty tough, and will be a bit better slicer than the RC-5 all around. I think the RC-6 will be a bit more versatile.

Oh, and BTW, I'll be getting the forum knife when it comes out too, and multiple folders, I'm sure. :D

Bottom line is any RAT knife will be great. I'm sure many of them crossover in different tasks that they can accomplish.

Gosh does anyone have good things to say about the rc-5 around here!!! lol I think it is the best blade RAT has made and its as though RAT cutlery doesn't like it!! :)

You have to realize we built that knife to spec for some SERE instructors. It's a great knife. Absolutely high quality and tough as nails. It fits exactly what the SERE guys wanted. But just because I'm a partner in RC doesn't mean I have to personally like something ;) If I said otherwise then I'd be full of shit and lying to you. ;)

Much thanks. To each his own when it comes to a particular knife. But honestly, I could live the rest of my life with nothing but a cheap machete around my farm and a slipjoint in my pocket and do just fine. As bad as I hate to say this, the knife industry for the most part is pure BS!

I was planning on using the RC-5 as a hunting/camping knife. Looks like that is not such a good idea???

I would have to say a RC-6 paired with an RC-4 or 3 is best for me. The RC-5 is awesome but it's a TANK and heavy like one. It has it's place in the world but I reach for the RC-6 when I go camping

That's the most pertinent opinion I have heard in a very long time. Knives are humankind's most ancient and most basic tools, remember that their design has not changed fundamentally for many thousands of years. IMO a knife is exactly as good as the skills of the person who wields it. I happen to like the RC 5 a lot, maybe because it is a very reliable tool. Reliability and a good cutting edge are the main and most important features of a knife. The rest is BS! Jeff you're an honest man, don't ever change
