On a new Para Military 2: should the 'bevel edges' look the same on both sides?

Give it a rest buddy. Scissors are machine chisel ground blades...there aren't even 2 sides of the bevel to compare, and the whole thing is done on a machine. Scissors also aren't nearly as sharp from the factory as the average spyderco knife. A $100 knife isn't an expensive knife, and being that they are mass production and sharpened by hand, there are going to be some variances from knife to knife and even from one side of the bevel to the other. That factory edge is going to last what, maybe a week with some real use and will then need to be sharpened anyway, at which point, the owner can put whatever kind of edge he wants on the knife. As for the argument that we are talking about a knife which is meant to cut things thus the requirement for a sharp factory edge, I think you missed the fact that the op said the knife is sharp and performance is not inhibited. For $100 you get well built and high performance, you don't necessarily get pretty. If you want pretty guaranteed you'll have to open up your wallet and fork over at least 2-3 times the cost of the para2...

$100 isn't an expensive knife? Sounds like you've lost your mind being around here too long. I've had my share of CRKs, Striders, etc., but I've also kept my sense of what a dollar is worth in the real world.

2-3 times the price of a PM2 for "pretty"? Kershaw/ZT consistently put excellent edge grinds on their knives at every price range, and Hogue puts out some of the best factory edge I've seen with the EX-01. Hell, try to find a Sanrenmu with edge grinds as uneven as that.

Spyderco has some of the sharpest knives out of the box. Don't knock them for their sharpening.

Umm cool story but nobody is knocking the sharpness of the knife... We are having a conversation about the uneven grind on the OP's knife and what is acceptable and whats not. I don't feel there is one person in this entire conversation that has knocked Spyderco for their sharpness or quality in general.

My apologies to all.

I should have stayed "On Topic" and simply answered the question.. my "real" answer to the question is "YES" both sides should look the same.

Instead, I voiced "My Opinion and expectation" of what "I" will receive from a factory supplied edge.. (which was never asked for)

When I receive a knife, (almost always) the first thing I do is reprofile the edge to my liking and then sharpen the knife as I see fit from there.

I never meant to stir up controversy about what was "expected" by others.

Part of the reason we pay for the $100+ knives is for quality and perfection.

No that is the reason we pay $400+ for knives ;)

Some of you have some pretty unrealistic expectations, and I don't think the poop slinging is necessary?

I don't remember the last time I had to get a $80 haircut over a $20 one to make sure the sides are cut evenly. Some things are just expected, at any price.

I expect to get what I pay for, spyderco sell performance not perfection.

Don't know what haircuts have to do with it, I cut my own and the sides are rarely even :S

Funny thing is, if that knife had been manufactured by Busse Combat instead of Spyderco, you'd have paid MORE for it with those bevels. ;)

I'm also with Rudge on this one. If I were you, I'd use your P2 until it needs sharpening. Then if you're uncertain of your sharpening skills, send it to our resident sharpening guru, richard j, and it will come back with the cleanest, sharpest, most even edge you've ever seen. :)

I have owned 10 kershaws (3 chinese, 7 us) and 10 spydercos (3 us, 4 taiwan, 1 seki, 2 chinese). Not a single 1 has perfect primary grinds. Hell, the swedge on my kershaw ram is ridiculously uneven side to side but who cares.
