ok, just did one for my dad... one of the freebee gift things. bevel was about a 60deg chisel grind! Took me 30min to have it shaving.

I'd say at least a 4. I don't feel I'm a 5 yet as there is always room for improvement. However I do most of my sharpening on an Edge Pro or a Sharpmaker, so even a monkey could get a decent edge with those tools. :) If I were rating myselfs on just a plain stone, maybe a 2?

5. EZE-Lap diamond, Spyderco ceramic, and bare leather strop. All done freehand. I will use a Lansky to thin or repair a badly damaged edge.

2.5, which to my mind means I suck. Most knives I can get hair-scraping sharp, with a lot of effort, but never any sharper. Except anything made by Newt Livesay - I can make them look sharp without actually being able to cut yogurt. Woe is me.

I don't like sharpening systems too much
(in fact I'd say Yuurk! :barf:) so I use only plain natural mountain stones and I'm
getting not bad with it, so I'd say I'm
a confirmed 3 on this scale, even if I
tend to be able getting shaving edges most
of the time now, using a leather strop
for the finishing...

5...I'm pretty sure that I could even sharpen ice cream if I had to.:D.

My sharpening skills hinge on the knife. . .more specifically. . .the previous grind that was put on by the maker.

Another factor. . .the type of blade material.

I'd have to say that I float between a 3 and 4 on the majority of my EDC's.

I also have a few that I can get razor sharp with my eyes closed.

Unfortunately. . .I do have a few where my learning curve is rather steep - like a damn cliff ! :D

I am getting better though. :)

I'm a ONE! I'm not proud of it but I'm learning. I just tried sharpening my first knife last night. I don't have the best equipment, and it was a horrible knife, but I am pretty sure the book I was reading at the time was pretty good, "Razor Edge Book of Sharpening".

I have a Smith Precision Sharpening System. I was working on an old junker knife I have had since I was 15. It was used and dull when I got it...and was overly abused, and never sharpened. good news is I don't care if I destroy it, so it was a good choice to practice on.

I got the blade sharp. Much sharper than it ever was. I even shaved a couple of hairs at one point in the process (or tore them out!) but think I dulled back a little later on.

I'll try again.

Thanks to everyone on this list for the awesome information.

If 5 is the top level, then guys like Joe Talmadge are 5's. I'm happy with my sharpening skills but I'm not in the same league as guys like that. I figure I'm a 4 because after a lot of practice over the last couple of years I can get a razor sharp edge freehand. Good tools help a lot: DMT Duo Sharp and a black arkansas stone.

Thanks jmx. Yup...you just witnessed my first, second, and now third post. I am not new to carrying a knife...I have just recently decided to start carrying a sharp knife. ;)
