Did Buck make any 119's in ATS34? And, if they did, how would you tell?

They also made some BG-42 blade 119's in the Master series and over runs from that issue.

Let see Dave, there were 32 of those charcoal 119s made. I bought several as a premium steel 119 is damn rare but I'm down to just two plus that Ironwood custom.
Ironwood and ATS34 with mirror finish.

Was there a 100yr anniversary model with a special steel? or tang stamp?

The 119 was used as a "100 anniversary" stamped knife . It had a special stamped blade
but I don't think the steel was special nor do I think it had the medallion in the handle like the 110 . Another one that may interest you mley, is the 819 with checkered walnut handle and S30V blade and a special sheath . A real prize if you find one . DM ;)

Those 32 were blades that were left over from the Chuck Buck signature series 119 that was made a few years prior. They had Chucks signature etched in white on the handle and the blade was also engraved signature series (and stamped ATS-34). I believe they made 100 of those with ATS-34 blades as well.

Mley there where some of the 819 made with FB stamped on the blade, those came with a standard 119 nylon sheath, and with out the signatures on them. I found these to be more user friendly for me, so I would not have to worry about messing up a really nice one. HL PS the FB stands for factory blimmish, but I could not find any on them.

The reason I ask about the 100yr anniversary knife is because I believe I have one. The sheath is leather and stamped with a 3 line stamp that say's "100 Years", "BUCK", and bottom line "KNIVES". The tang stamp is also a 3 line stamp with "BUCK" on top line, then "119T" second line, and "U.S.A." on the bottom line. If I remember right the sales man told me that it's blade was ATS34. That's why I'm asking about the steel materials on the 119's.

Sorry for no pic yet on the knife. My camera is on the flitz.

If it's ATS-34 it will be so marked on the blade just like this. If not it's a 420HC blade.
PlummerDave gave you a link that clearly shows the Bos/ATS34 stamp on the charcoal 119 buildouts. That's what you should have too if your knife has a premium steel.

Your sheath sounds like a 100yr anniversary sheath, but the knife if marked 119T is not. The T indicates that it was made in 2003 and not 2002. A 2002 should have an anvil stamp as a date mark.

As Flatlander said, if it is a premium steel, it will be marked as to what it is. I think your salesman was either missinformed or misrepresented yours.

Here's a link to the date code charts.

Of course, I love premium steels - especially S30V. But - as a 'user' - that Bos heat-treated 420HC in a $34 WallyWorld 119 is hard to beat. Sure, regular use dulls it - but a basic Spydie 'Sharpmaker' will get it back to razor status in shorter order than the premium metals - and with less 'care'!

That said... we need a 'Custom Shop 119' in S30V...

I am confident that your statement concerning the marking of premium steel is 99.999% correct, but like everything BUCK, there are exceptions. We know that the Master Series was made with BG-42 steel but here is one that is not so marked.

I agree, I also had one of the 118 Buildouts that were made of D2 steel. I bought two, one was marked and the other wasn't. Although Joe Houser assured me that all those buldouts were the D2, there was no way to authenticate it. I ended up giving it away to a friend who didn't care one way or the other.

Your Master Series has all the other markings and since they were all supposed to be BG-42, I'd be satisfied that it was in fact that steel.

Having a plain everyday 119 from 2003 represented to be ATS34 would raise a red flag immediately for me without some kind of autentication besides a sales persons assurance.

I remember awhile back when I bought (off eBay) a Burl handled Vanguard that was listed as having a BG-42 blade. When I got it, there was no Bos stamp or BG-42 on it anywhere. When I questioned the seller about it, he said his supplier "told" him it was. Joe Houser said that if it wasn't marked as BG-42 you had to assume that it wasn't. That's one of very few eBay deals I've had that got really ugly.

I think in the case of the Master Series, I'd assume that it was if it wasn't marked though.

Yes, Tele. and Plumber the Master Series came to my mind as well . Beyond this I'd say there are few exceptions and Plumber's 118 with D2 is one . I have one and mine is marked . Don't know how that happened . Then, I agree with Plumber on the 100yr. Anniversary model . You have the sheath but not the knife . I have one and both of mine are marked '100yr. Anniversary' and I'm sure its standard steel . DM

David, does yours say 119 on the tang or does it just have Buck over the anvil over U.S.A. ? I seem to remember a thread where Joe said the 100 yr stamp was only the anvil with no model number. 'll try to find that again.

I found it.

Are model numbers necessary?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heres a question for all of us knife users and collectors;
Do you feel that it is necessary to have a model number stamped onto each knife?
This year, in celebration of Buck's 100th year, we replaced the model number with an anvil mark. Should we leave the model number off for next year?
I will be taking your comments on this topic to a meeting in which we will be discussing this very issue, I appreciate any feedback you can give.
Take care,
