Hello all, this is my first post in the knife makers forum. I have been reading and reading the past few months and taking notes and I think i have all I need to know up to this point except one thing. I have read that you don't want to grind your edges all the down to a true edge before HT as it will cause problems. Is this true? And if it is then what is the recommended thickness for a blades edge prior to HT. I am working if 1095 for now if that matters. Thank you.

Yes, having an edge, or near to it, before heat treat can cause warpage, and possibly cracks, I think? I think the general concensus was something about like the width of a dime, before heat treatment. I use the same steel, and I don't have problems with breakage, and hardly any warpage problems.

.030-.040" ,or as Blue Dragon and Warrior24 said, the thickness of a dime.
The thicker edge will help prevent overheating of the edge, warping, decarb problems, and allow some metal to work with in final shaping.

I grind my blades to .010-.020 before heat treating- However, I use Paul Bos for H.T. So far, I have not had any problems whatsoever after they return.
If you are doing your own heat treat and temper, I would stick with the .030-.040 mentioned above to allow you room to fix any errors or problems, then grind to final thickness after H.T.

Thank you every one for the quick responses. I will finish grinding today on my first blade and throw up some pre-HT photos. Thank you all again.
