On fixing things

Fact: we're here, still, after millions of years.
Fact: matter can not be created or destroyed.
Fact: every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Entropy is just a succinct way to describe that things tend to mix, and that heat transfers to cooler objects.

the rather pedantic statement by oppenheimer in post #1 all boils down to, as karda referenced earlier, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

a lesson we ALL should live by.

the trick is recognizing that it ain't broke.

the companion rule is "if it ain't broke don't fiddle with it either".

a prime contemporary situation is the sun is going into a low activity phase that in the past has created mini-ice ages. the planet earth has responded with a lot of volcanic activity producing volumes of greenhouse gasses to blunt the effect. man has added their two cents into the equation by also producing greenhouse gasses. herbivores of the world have also contributed their methane, and bacteria are doing their best to break down wastes into gases as well. this will help protect us all from freezing our butts off during the coming ice age.

so what do the touchy-feely liberals do? they try to fix it. they fiddle with it. they tax it (some of the money sticks to them of course in the process further encouraging them), they legislate, they spend vast amounts on studies and reports to justify their taking yet more of our money. the earth is doing it's best to use all it's resources to stabilise itself, and they think they know best and screw around where they are not wanted.

Fixing things sometimes requires letting them get to a certain state before you can act. It's like when I first learned to block an overhead attack from batons/sticks: if you move too quickly, you don't have enough power and are unbalanced, so another attack can slip your guard. If you attempt to stop things too late, then you can't generate enough power to do so.

Sometimes "fixing" is only possible with radical change.

I believe that's what he was trying to say anyway.
