i was wanting to get some info on the premium grinders, like dozier, bader, kmg, all the ones that take the bader attachments.

the things i would like to know is what attachments are available, necessary, and just plain nice to have?

what purpose do all the various attachments serve?

and where can you get the rotary platen, and all the other attachments for that matter?

also for the money difference is the dozier well worth it? i got to use one recently and i am quite smitten!

For a kmg with all the bells and whistles look up buemont metal works-you can get the rotory platen there http://www.beaumontmetalworks.com/ l. For the map arm see http://adammichaelknives.com/purchase.php . for a really cool platen see http://www.caffreyknives.net/PlatenPage.html . you can get all you need for ever and ever ( in my opinion) with the kmg and parts but be ready to spend $4000 for the whole shabang. great quality, great customer comminication ( rob from buemont). I know many people will vouch for the kmg and love it. ---mark

KMG and Bader B3 are the main grinders ( There are many other great grinders, too). They and their accessories are readily available.
As for accessories....I don't suggest getting all the whistles and bells in the original package (unless they come with a used grinder you are getting at a deal). The starter things you need are a flat platen (The combo platen works well here), a fork tip ( for small wheels) with a 3/4 or 1" wheel, a contact wheel arm with an 8" wheel, and a box full of belts. A starter belt order is: 6@60 grit ceramic, 12@120 grit Zirconia, 12@220 grit AO , 12@400 grit AO, 12@400 grit SC.

More wheels, rotary platens, specialty platens, belts in all sizes up to 800 grit, scotch brite and leather belts, hinged base plates, jigs, etc. may come later, but many makers have a shelf stacked with the item they initially bought and never used twice (or even once).

what are all these attachments used for specifically and waht is the hinged base plate?

if i get to choose what grinder i get, its gonna be a dozier, they are about 15 minutes from me, plus they are awesome

A hinged base plate holds the motor to put tension on the belt and to allow you to change speeds with step pullies. However, if you get a Dozier you won't need one.

i have got a hf 1x30, its pretty useless but i can do a little sharpening and shape some thin metal, its pretty entertaining, good to get out some frustrations and great to have something to practice on a little, between the grinder and a few belts i spent about $100, money very well spent, i really like it............

but that dozier, that map arm, that rotary platen, and all those big beatiful contact wheels........im goin absolutely crazy, im, dreamin about it, im talkin about it every day to anyone who will listen, i drift off to sleep every night planning my setup, thinking about all the angles ill be able to grind, how easy it will be to change wheels........... i guess im a little too obsessed

my manager at work believes in this manifest destiny stuff where if you envision yourself in the situation you wanna be in, youll get there..... manifest destiny huh

i tend to think that if something is important enough for you to invest all the time planning and thinking about something , youll make it happen for yourself, but i guess thats all a long way of sayin that im gettin a dozier........SOON!

im wonderin what im gonna have to do to get that map arm on it, any ideas?

im also wonderin about a custom tool adapter/arm something where your various attachments, wheels and rotary platen, whatever else you can fit, all of it would just sit on a rotating......carousell, or lazy suzan type setup and just flip into place when needed, although the dozier seems slightly more limited for space in that area behind the working part of the belt than the kmg

honestly i dont even have a real grinder so it might be overkill, its hard for me to say when im just workin from the limited pics i can find on the web,but then again it might be the next map arm, you guys could probably tell a little more about its possible usefullness

i just had to get some thoughts out, let me know what you think
