I am a new comer to knife making, I have been using D-2 steel, and depending on a friend to heat treat for me. I am trying to become more independant and was wondering what is the best steel for oil quinching. Thanks for any help

Welcome to Blade Forums & shoptalk.

The easiest knife steel to heattreat is 1084. Well within the means of most do-it-yourself'ers.
[available from www.njsteelbaron.com]

Look thru the ~stickies~ at the top of the main page here and read, read, read. There is a ton of gread information on every aspect of knifemaking.

Good luck & have fun!!

Also, fill out some info about you so we can help you better. By knowing your age, occupation, location, etc. we can give better answers according to your skill level & understanding. Besides, there may be a famous maker just across town from you.

I can not recommend 1084 enough. I just receintly purchased an Evenheat oven to finally do my own heat treating. I have had some done for me and it makes a GREAT knife. I just heat treated 10 blades this weekend with excellent results. I can not be happier with everything.
