On pocket clips and car doors

I'm new to this forum and I have enjoyed reading everyone's posts. I have found a wealth of information in here. I wonder if anyone other than me has had any problems with scraping the paint off of their car doors with their pocket clips. I mean all it takes is one good bump and - scrape - their it goes. I guess I should invest in some more touch-up paint.

Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt.

I've done it to car doors, chairs, bed posts, banisters, etc. Invest in the touch up paint. The other option is to carry your knife in your pocket with a lanyard attached. You can trail the end of the lanyard out of your pocket so that you can pull the knife out quickly.

The old Spyderco Delicas and Michael Walker lightweights with the molded plastic clip are great car door savers.

Not only car doors and furniture, but I've scratched my wife's legs as well. Hey, I gotta have a knife on me when I cuddle...

Let see:
Wife's leg, daughter's leg, rocking chair(before the cushion, man I heard it on that one), car door(many times), and various other items.

Also as Copfish pointed out, I have worn out a pocket or two(usually my sweats)

Okay, partly in jest, partly a weird but workable idea that just occurred to me: what if you cover the outside face of the clip with something like "moleskin" (that fuzzy stuff that comes in sheets and is adhesive on one side). It normally comes in a pinkish/tan "flesh" color, but maybe other colors are available, or you could dye it -- hey, if it were denim colored, it could make the knife blend in even better...

Ah guys- Now I'm done for- If my girlfriend reads this, she'll know where all of the gouges all over the house came from- Also the big scrape on the door of the VW that I blamed on a mystery parking lot encounter w/ a shopping cart

I have scratched everything and anything but I am usually more concerned about the damage done to the clip.

What about heat-shrink tubing stuff? Or maybe plastic dip? I've finally got myself programmed not to scratch cars, but I still have a problem with catching my clips on the arms of office chairs (yes, I ride a chair all day). I've been keeping a Matriarch in my left (support-side) back pocket since I got it, so now I'm catching on both sides....

been carrying a bench made 975 for about two years and I never had a problem scratching a door but I'm left handed and the knife is in the left pocket.

Last week I received two gouges on my thumb as I sat down on the sofa - and I thought the blade was dangerous! I like the idea about the plastic dip. I wonder if it will come off without leaving a residue? I think I might try it on one of my low cost knives.

What about the clip? Did you hurt it? Cars can go to the body shop, what about the poor little clip? There are no clip shops you know, I think your priorities are misplaced!

I have developed the curious habit of putting my right hand on my right hip as I pass by furniture, try to slip between cars, walk close to a wall (such as passing someone in a narrow hallway), or brush close to someone (I once had a lady's dress catch on my pocket clip). I put my hand on my hip even when I don't have a knife clipped there. It's become a habit.

I like the plastic dip idea.

Clip design is a factor, I believe. Spyderco has the best ones.

I put a couple of holes in my car seat when I used to carry my BM AFCK on my left side inside the waistband.

I got fed up with it, so now I carry my Crawford KFF in an Inside Pocket Knife Holster from http://www.magills.com

A nicely rounded, plastic coated pocket clip would be well received by all I'll bet. I'm going to try the heat shrink tubing good idea.

labrat, go to your local well stocked pet store and buy some of the clear plastic tubeing they sell for air pumps , it is flexible and it will stretch some , this works . j.c.t.

I`ve adopted Gollnicks method. I`ve simply made it a habit to place my hand between the clip and anything I don`t want scratched. I don`t even think about it anymore. When I can`t use my hand I just make a conscious effort to be sure that the clip doesn`t come into contact with anything scratchable. Marcus

Oh, man, I can just picture some of you guys doing the Macarena trying to cover all the clips at the same time!
