On setting up a cache

I have a question... Which is How can I store a rifle, maybe more than 1 in a container long term in a mountainous area that is hot, cold, and wet?

Long term to me is over 1 year to maybe 5 years. I know I could re-cosmolene any gun, and place it in a sealed pipe, but heating and cooling would condensate in time. When I say rifle think in line with pretty long, like a Mauser K-98, and perhaps even longer.

Money is a consideration as well. I have thought of using a car top carrier, but they are fairly expensive new, and I have not seen any for sale used. If I had some thing like that and room for foam insulation maybe that would work. Most PVC Pipe seems to narrow for more than 1 long gun, and with no room for foam, so it would take more than 1 pipe, or a pipe for each gun.

I would bury this container, but not too deep, and attempt to make a drainage for snow melt and rain run off. Also no ammo would be sealed directly in the container, and maybe no bolt, so if the cache were discovered there would not be much to use for the finder.

I appreciate any help with this request... Mac aka W.McKay

the condensation issue can be dealt with easily assuming that your tube is airtight.

just drop in a load of silica gel (called gel but comes dry in gravules, go figure). They can be obtained in most photo supplies shops.

pack them in a soce and tie it up, that way the granules won't get everywhere. BUT that being said, if you have a wooden stock, the excessive dryness cause could crack the wood... not sure of the effect on stabilied wood.

synthetics should be safe.

good luck

p/s how much you'd need would be pretty much guesswork. But you can always err on the side of caution and pack 2 jars worth of it in the tube

there are rainy seasons, hurricanes, civil unrest(maybe). Think of where you would want to go. for instance if you stored something at the library. well maybe the library is downtown near an embassy where something is more likely to happen.

so I haven't been to singapore so I don't know which part of the city is the safest. most likely warehouse districts are overlooked.

I had actually given the idea of a tsunami or hurricane some thought... but found this out from informal research (ie, talking to a pretty large number of people) and here's the outcome.

Hurricanes don't hit singapore. Apparently it's to do with our geographical location... surrounded by a natural barrier in the south... and we're pretty well sheltered in the north too... heck we're pretty well sheltered all round! One of the reasons that we actually developed beyond a small fishing village hundreds of years ago.

And apparently, for the same reason, we're sheltered from tsunamis too... I'm not enough of a geography expert to argue the case with any of you guys... but this is what I understand about my homeland.

so anyhow, thanx for all the great suggestions! I loved the PVC pipe idea and I'll go looking at some suppliers and see what my options are. Thanx guys!

I've also thought about that. I would think you could put the rifle in a special bag that prevents corrosion (I know I've seen them somewhere), place that in a large Pelican case along with some desiccant (silica gel), place the pelican case in a couple of 55 gal. drum liners (to prevent water from getting into and around the case seals and freezing and thawing) and bury it.

Does anyone see any flaws with this technique (aside from the $160 cost of the Pelican case)?

Thanks
