? on tempering a blade

i've dabbled in grinding my own blades and forging a couple from 5160 steel. i understand the principle of heat treating and tempering. i bought a sub $300 sword made from 5160 steel. the reviews were quite impressive. when i tested the blade by chopping twice on a pine 2x2, it bent. the file test failed and also flexing the edge test failed. this leads me to believe the blade was either not heat treated correctly or shaped in the annealed state and not heat treated at all. people on a forum said i could re-temper the blade by putting it in on oven at 250 deg and quenching it in water. i don't think this will help. my thoughts are the blade needs to be heat treated and tempered correctly. what are your thoughts?

Yes, that's too bad. Sorry about your lose. The blade is obviously not heat treated or at least not correctly. Sorry but merely tempering will not help this blade. Tempering is only a component of the heat treat and not a component that will harden this one. Maybe straighten her out and hang above the wet bar? If it really is of 5160 someone could heat treat it I suppose.

if i made my forge longer, i could do it my self. the company i got this from is known to have great customer service and hopefully they will exchange it. the only reason i bought this sword is there was a review of the sword. they were able to hit a car tire pell more than 2,000 times without any damage to the blade. now i believe that to be true if the 5160 has been heat treated and tempered correctly.

Probably not heat treated right, but if you really screwed up the cut, you could bend a blade while 'chopping' on a post. What file test did the sword fail? How did it fail the edge-flex test (which is largely dependent on geometry)?

How thick is the sword? What is its geometry like? Is it made to cut 2X2's?

2000 cuts on a rubber tire, sure. 2000 cuts on a steel belted tire, no way. 2000 cuts on the steel wheel, not a chance in hell. Steel is just steel--being shaped into a sword won't give it magical properties.
