Hello Wilderness Folks.
Purchased a knifemakers membership, should take effect middle of next week at the latest....

Well, I used to post here on average 20+ a day, but that has waned over the last 2 years...
This was my sub-forum, the place I came to hang out, and read, learn, and share. Time changes a lot of things, but my interests haven't changed a whole lot. I like high end folders now...that's new. My love for fixed blades has not diminished at all. I love a good 3-4" blade, and still have a soft spot for choppers.
Why have I dropped off the map so to speak? We had to move back home to Texas, and that took everything I had, to raise the funds for the move, and settle in Austin when we got home (my family and me). (EDIT: we "had" to move, because we missed home)
Well, we are pretty much settled in, and for you all that remember me, I am keeping my word. I am making knives.
Outdoor knives, designed from the knowledge I have learned here...on BF and from my keen friendships I have made here..I don't just post on Bladeforums, I have made real friends here, that matter to me. That I and my family love.
You know who you are.
The thing that bonds us, is the most important tool ever devised, the knife. We love them, or we wouldn't bother to be here. I have gone through many ideas on what makes a good knife, over the years here. What stands out, is tough, good looking, easy to sharpen and functional. Not a new idea on any front.
I moved from loving production knives (I even started a post years ago stating as much) to seeing the value in a custom made tool...I started making knives in 1998, in a machine shop I worked in, in MA, right after I got out of the Army. I spent a lot of time embellishing production knives, and doing stock removal knives over the years...but now I am forging. Banging on hot steel.
It is a new beginning for me at 40 years old. I have never been more fulfilled. I hope you guys like some of them, and that you accept me as a maker, and not just some old fart member, that thinks he can make knives.
I do everything in house...I made my own mini forge, and bought a vintage anvil...
I think I have good idea's, but who doesn't think these things when they start creating things from other things.
Again, not to ramble, if it wasn't for the folks here, that constantly pointed out what works and what doesn't, I don't think I would be where I am creatively, and that matters to me. I feel like no matter how successful I become as a maker, I owe it to Spark and the community here. That means you guys and gals.
Just up front, my hero's in the knife making game are some that are here, and some that are not. I bow my head in respect to Tim Lively's vision, and others in the NeoTribal community, which is where I will take most of my work...
But guys like Rick Marchand will always be my hero. His work is some of the best I have ever laid hands or eyes on...he makes me want to do better. I think we are lucky to have his smart ass around here.
Natural talent comes to mind when I see his work.
Another maker that I love to admire is Stormcrow, I saw him grow here, gettting better each hammer swing..He lives an hour from me. We are gonna meet real soon, most likely to his dismay. :D
Anyways..I just wrote a bunch more than I planned, but I want to be here, in wilderness and survival. This is my home here on Bladeforums.
I know I am full of it from time to time. I have what I think is the best way, and I am as stubborn as a mule a lot of the time...but I do mean it when I say I love you guys. You have connected me to the whole damn world for 7 years..
I have learned so much, and hope to pass it on to my kids when they care to listen. Thanks.
Keep a look out, I will be changing my user name to my knife makers mark and upgrading to knifemaker, as soon as I have a stable of knives to sell.
Also, I will not be taking orders..ever. I have seen good men, fall short, by taking this path, I will make cool knives in bunches, and sell them here, on Bladeforums only...I might take some direction on what to forge though...I hope you understand.

May I wish you all the best in your endeavours! Being new here, I am coming to understand how you have built such a connection within this community and how others have shared their knowledge so generously.

Great stuff GNK! I will be first in line for one of your knives, from that post alone I already see the one I want :D Really looking forward to seeing more of your work

Great to hear that you are making knives now. I look forward to seeing all the new knives you make.

Gotta love it when a man knows what he wants and GOES FOR IT! I hope it's a fun ride too. And I'll keep my eye out for your blades. :)

Thanks folks.
3 more smaller utility blades today....I really like forging the smaller ones..almost instant gratification! LOL.
I will get some of these finished up and get switched over here soon...make a good start to it.
I need to go get some leather to....aargh..boring.

Your knives look good, I wish the best of luck to you.
Are you going to sell here?

Yes sir, I plan on making the jump to knifemaker here on bladeforums, and selling some from time to time.
I still have a day job, so I don't think I can put out the numbers of some other makers here, but I do make the time to forge or tinker almost everyday..I try not to get lazy.

Good luck to you Gene! Its been great getting to know you and you know I wish you all the best on this! I can tell you guys that seeing his knives in progress is awesome and it's always impressive to see someone love, TRULY love what they do, as Gene obviously does...

Thanks Chris,
Chris is another fine friend that I met through collecting knives...good stuff.

Gene,
Sorry to hear you had to leave MA. Sounds like you had a good thing going there. I'll be looking out for your knives on the forum.
Dave

Gene you are one of the realest men I know. It's not the first time I've thought this: My hat is off to you for following your dreams and for doing it the way that you are; with earnestness, and somehow simultaneously with humility and confidence.

NO WAY, don't be sorry...I left MA of my own free will. I am still doing Carpentry at the same level or better here in Austin.
Texas is my home...I adopted it, and it adopted me.
I make my knives in the afternoons, and weekends. This week has been weird so I have more time than usual on my hands...so instead of watching my favorite shows..Teen Mom and the Jodi Arias trial..I decided to make some knives look good instead.

Thanks for the kind words bro, they are much appreciated.

You had me at hello. :)
I am susceptible to flattery, sounds like you need a knife to try out....
