On the fence about getting a Strider

To me this all depends on how you do your purchasing. If you hold the person who owns the company personally responsible for their past mistakes and pass judgment on them and striking that judgement in the form of a boycott then no you shouldnt get a strider.

However if you are the type of person who wants one of the toughest knives currently available with countless satisfied customers and can look past the character defects of a single person involved with the company then I think the purchase is worth your money.

I tend to judge knives based on build quality and price alone. Any other "higher moral" considerations dont interest me. Probably because I am no saint myself and have plenty of mistakes for which I can only hope forgiveness finds me. I think it is all too easy to sit in judgement of other people while at the same time dismissing, denying or otherwise making light of our own defects. Did mick make mistakes? Sure did. Does that mean he makes a bad knife? not even close. And I dont think buying one of them means you cast a vote in support of his past mistakes but rather should be looked at as a gesture of understanding that we all make them.

I haven't used the warranty, so I can't speak to that...

I can tell you that this SMF CC 3/4 grind in 3V spends more time in my pocket than most of my other knives.

I love Strider's 3V! I can get the edge stupid sharp, and it holds that edge for months of daily use for me.
I'm always watching the dealers and if timing and funds align, I will snatch up another SMF or SNG in 3V in a heartbeat! :D

Hey there. Good question and something I've dealt with recently. About the Mick stuff... In all honesty, it's not your problem. Let it go. That's what stopped me from buying a knife from Strider for the LONGEST time then I realized, I'm just a consumer, and the knife is just a product, and I don't give a rat's ass about who said what. Well actually, I do care, but I can forgive someone for the past mistakes especially if there are other people involved in making what is, in my eyes, a top tier product.

I don't like Strider's too cool for school attitude. I don't like the "bad ass" thing they push with every ounce of their being. I don't like how they don't respond to emails, unless you jump through hoops. I don't like the stupid "lock rock" issue they continue to have, and refuse to fix straight from the factory. If they know the knives need a bigger freaking stop pin, INSTALL IT BEFORE IT SHIPS, DONT MAKE ME WARRANTY IT. I also think that they are in fact over priced, because I can spend less and get better fit and finish.

Ok, with all of that out of the way. Here is what I do like. Strider designs are awesome. The Lego handle fits the hand perfectly, the knives look great, they offer awesome steel options, and these knives really are CRAZY tough. I own an SnG in PD#1 and let me tell you, the knife is an absolute ANIMAL. There is nothing that I can put this knife through that it won't handle. I can hold it 50 different ways that are all equally comfortable, and useful from a utilitarian stance. If you're drawn to the design and want to try it out, do it. Chances are you'll be happy. I hope this helps you!

I beat the snot out of mine.

Next on my list is a DB. Fixed blades can't lock rock because they don't rock locks, ya dig?

Lock rock I don't see my SMF is dead solid with the new lock up.

And my brand spanking new SnG came with God awful lock rock. I sent it in for warranty work, and still love the knife. I'm a pretty fair guy for that, I'd say. Lock rock is a major issue, is commonly reported, and is an ongoing issue with tons of history to it on Striders. They need to fix it. It is what it is. I will continue to give Strider my money, but the lock rock thing is DEFINITELY a thing.

I just acquired my first Strider, a PT CC from Ooitszoo a month ago and I can't put it down. It has been #1 in the EDC rotation lately (and my other knives are CRK Sm Sebenza Tanto w Lightning Strike CF handle, LionSteel SR2 & Hinderer XM-18 3" slicer, respectable company). The smoothness of the action is superb! I pretty much look for a knife with a useful blade to do anything that comes my way. I prefer to be able to have my knife light, slim and 4" handle length. The Strider just nails it!

I like the "hard use" characteristic (however that may manifest itself in a knife's design and material use) for one reason. If I need to use my knife in an emergency to pry something open or cut through metal sheeting, it will be able to do that a number of times and still be useful. I use my knives gently and also resist temptation to use them for things that may damage the knife. I have chipped an edge on an Emerson CQC7 back in the day and have not made that mistake again. But, I want to be able to use it for hard use if I get in a situation that requires me to damage the knife to get out of a bad spot.

As for the question about getting a Strider, get a user on the forum and see if it works for you.

And then, how can one not like something that looks like this!!!

And if you own one of these Toxic Green beauties, I would love to buy it from you!

And mine came as tightly fitted and well made as anything else I own. So I naturally feel pretty good about it.

I've owned 2 Strider SnG's and still have 1.

Got a CC SnG with the old style lock and it had lock rock. Sold it.

Bought another with the new lock changes and it has the same issue but not as bad.

Why did I buy a second? Because of how it looks. Fool me twice I guess.

I'm not saying that the knife can't still get the jobs done but not enough QC for me personally. I started this knife hobby with a CRK Sebenza 21 so maybe after getting his knives it jaded me with other companies that are not up to the same standards.

Looks good though.

Not bad either.

I only have one Strider, an SNG that I won here from a giveaway. I'm not keen on Mick Strider and his infamous past, but the knives are great. Mine is newer and has good fit and finish with zero lock rock. I'm not sure if I would pay the going price of a new one, but you can generally find them for a discount on the exchange. At the price commonly found here, think they're a good buy.

This is a well documented problem as you mentioned. Still I dont know which bothers me more. Strider admitting their knives have a problem and not doing anything about it or the other companies who never admit there is a problem with their product no matter how many people speak up.
