I broke my ski last weekend. Of course, i sold my backup rig the beginning of this season. So, this morning i was thinking of what i could do to get myself outside. I know! i'll go fly fishing! I've never been in the winter, but why not?

I am about 1/2 mile away from a river that allows winter trout fishing (The Winooski River). I wanted to explore a bit....i wanted to hike down quite aways and fish off the beaten path. but alas, about 1/2 mile down river, there was a gate and several strongly worded NO TRESSPASSING signs. Oh well.

When i turned around, i went about a hundred yards and noticed a finger sized maple sapling that had a nice scrape left over on it. i was looking at it for a minute or so...trying to figure out why it looked fresh. couldn't be. must just look it, i decided. while lost in my mind, i heard something running through the woods at about 8 o'clock from me. i turn and see a big deer at full stride crashing toward me. he passed about 10 yards in front of me. just as it went by, i looked back the way it came, and here came his buddy coming up on its tail.

What in the heck....But, before i could finish my thought, i learned the answer. i could hear a yip, yip, yap running toward me. I was really hoping it wasn't going to be a coyote. Nope....a blaze-orange vested dog came into sight, chasing those deer with a high-pitched bark. None of them paid me any mind. I thought about getting my camera out and trying to get a pic. but, i was content to just watch it all play out. i didn't want to miss anything. it was pretty wild.

I came to a slab of ice that had laid to rest on top of a little outlet. Should i cross it? You bet!

You're looking at a power plant. Just upriver past that bridge you can see is a dam.

Quick pic of my gear. Is that the VT Hunter? You bet it is.

Looking across from where i was fishing. You can't tell, but those walls are about 20' high.

Winding it down.

Nice man! Looks like a great time, thanks for the pics! That Harpoon IPA sure is tasty. I love a good IPA. Thanks again for the pics. Haven't found a spot like that down here.

Looks like a great day. I have a couple of fly rods but I haven't had any time to learn to use them yet. Another year and a half and I hope to be able to.
Hmmm, Harpoon IPA sounds good. I haven't had a beer in a while but I would love one right now.

That VT Hunter really grabs my eye. It looks like it would be a fantastic companion to a couple of mine. One day I will need one.

thanks guys.

mack...i've only been fly fishing for a few years. i can whip the water to a froth with the best of 'em! with that said though, i can see how folks can get into it. me?...i just like standing in a river. ;)

btw...what's in a year-and-a-half? you off the road?

I hope to be off the road then. My daughter will be out of school and I can stop paying the 600 bucks a month child support that has been making me work so much. I will be able to go home and live like a human being for the first time in twenty years. I hope.

ahhh. gotcha. that's rough. i hope that day comes before you know it. cheers mack.

P.S. i think you can guess, but i love that VT Hunter. let me know if you want to check it out.

Thanks. I will try one out when I have John make me one.:D
I can practically feel it just by the pictures. It's got to be a great cutter.
Cheers.

Incredible pics.. and even though I am Hawai'ian, and therefore inherently allergic to the cold, I would love to go adventuring somewhere like that.

I used to fly fish when I was young, my great uncle taught my brother and me how to do it, and tie our own flies. Great pics, looks like a good day out.

thanks guys.

and yeah...i had a good day for it yesterday. highs were in the upper 20's. sun was shining. a good day indeed.

Nice pics and locale:thumbup: I was thinking about hitting a river near me in a little bit, I need to get outside I've been couped up sick and it sucks:(

Looks like a great day on the water. How did you break your ski?

hope you feel better soon.

good question. not sure exactly. we got 8-10" of powder for last weekend. just enough to be dangerous in the woods, since it was essentially sitting on bare ground. i bounced off numerous roots and rocks. didn't think anything of it. but, when i was done skiing last saturday, i noticed i had busted my ski. funny part is...i decided to call it quits a bit early that day. told my friends i just wasn't feeling quite right. the broken ski probably had something to do with it. ;)

fortunately, i have enough skier friends (it's a community up here) that i am able to meet up with a couple guys next weekend, who have said they would let me borrow their backup rig for the end of the season. so, i have some options.

Nice outing Todd, thanks for the pics.
I much prefer a river over a lake, the constant motion & sounds of a river is soothing for the soul.
I hope to be getting out more in the near future myself.

Those are some great pics. Thanks for sharing them. I do flyfish myself, but haven't really been out in couple years. When I do get out, I usually do some small surface poppers for Bass and Bluegill. I used to use waders and work streams, but not so much lately...

Nice pictures, Todd - a great way to spend the day!

I am surprised you don't have snow there, I keep hearing of all the snow the northeast is getting hit with.

I have never picked up a fly fishing setup - that might be fun to try someday.

Thanks again for the pics -

best

thanks guys.

and andy...unfortunately, VT was spared the snow. the snow stayed closer to the coast.
