I broke my ski last weekend. Of course, i sold my backup rig the beginning of this season. So, this morning i was thinking of what i could do to get myself outside. I know! i'll go fly fishing! I've never been in the winter, but why not?
I am about 1/2 mile away from a river that allows winter trout fishing (The Winooski River). I wanted to explore a bit....i wanted to hike down quite aways and fish off the beaten path. but alas, about 1/2 mile down river, there was a gate and several strongly worded NO TRESSPASSING signs. Oh well.
When i turned around, i went about a hundred yards and noticed a finger sized maple sapling that had a nice scrape left over on it. i was looking at it for a minute or so...trying to figure out why it looked fresh. couldn't be. must just look it, i decided. while lost in my mind, i heard something running through the woods at about 8 o'clock from me. i turn and see a big deer at full stride crashing toward me. he passed about 10 yards in front of me. just as it went by, i looked back the way it came, and here came his buddy coming up on its tail.
What in the heck....But, before i could finish my thought, i learned the answer. i could hear a yip, yip, yap running toward me. I was really hoping it wasn't going to be a coyote. Nope....a blaze-orange vested dog came into sight, chasing those deer with a high-pitched bark. None of them paid me any mind. I thought about getting my camera out and trying to get a pic. but, i was content to just watch it all play out. i didn't want to miss anything. it was pretty wild.
I came to a slab of ice that had laid to rest on top of a little outlet. Should i cross it? You bet!
Here is a pic downriver.
Upriver.
You're looking at a power plant. Just upriver past that bridge you can see is a dam.
Quick pic of my gear. Is that the VT Hunter? You bet it is.
Looking across from where i was fishing. You can't tell, but those walls are about 20' high.
Winding it down.
This is what i call survival gear.
And, up it goes. Cheers guys!
