On the road again.....

I am in Reno tonight after a grand dinner at the Martin Hotel in Winnemucca...... It is one of the Basque shepherd hotels......been around since 1898 and served the Basques when they got off the range for some infrequent time off.... The Basques were the only people that could take that much solitude as it can take up to 23,000 acres to raise one sheep in Nevada.........Dinners are served family style and in the tradition there is too much to eat and there are always carafes of vin ordinarie on the table...... Lamb is, naturally, a staple....... Damned good it was..... In the words of my friend Macleid, they set an honest table.....

Will be more or less settled in tomorrow afternoon and will get back to posting more frequently...... I hope.....

Got into Napa mid afternoon yesterday........ Got settled into the rental house, poured a wee tot of vino, scored some interesting cheese, smoked animal, grapes and good bread, pigged out and collapsed....... Even with things as dry and drought stricken the Valley is beautiful........ Son John and daughter in law Megan arrived last night..... Sightseeing, lunch with an old friend and future hunting bud......... The cousin brought a case of most excellent wine over....... Gonna be a rough few days!!!!!........

Glad you made it safely, Mr. Becker. Looks like you will have a tough time of it for a while, so don't rough it until you have to.... :-)

The fundraiser at Rombauer Vineyards was yesterday and was a great success...... Weather was perfect, the crowd of 400 had a grand time, sipping, nibbling on some really fine tapas from Cindy Paulsen's Back Street Kichen..... The Winery is a Jewell set in a hillside garden..... I tend to be pretty proud of some of my ancestors and it is nice to be proud of what the current generation is doing...... My Napa cousins have built, over the last thirty five years, a fantastic enterprise....... They make world class wine, do many good works, are raising great kids, and are all around good people...... I am damned proud of them.......

I am headed toward Oregon tomorrow and hope to see Bill Harsey who is one of my all time favorite knife designers/makers and Jim Mayerson ofUtilitech..... Gotta go by way of Sacramento.... Big fire near Baryyessa.......

Having sampled some of their wares I'd be damned proud of them as well! Have fun in the PNW, tell the kids hi for me!

I was in the forest an hour west of Reno on the 21st.
Sorry I didn't know about the winery fundraiser sooner - my F-I-L, one of very few P-cancer survivors, would have very much enjoyed it.
Maybe next year.

They own the Rombauer Vineyards, the 2013 chardonnay was rated one of the best in the world. Having tasted it, I can attest to how amazing it is!
