Here is a little news which may be of interest to you, especially those who sent some money to be distributed to the kamis.

When we talked to Gelbu a day or two back this news astounded me. I lived in Nepal for three different Daseins and I have a better udnerstanding of what all this means but I'll try to put it into terms which all might be able to understand.

Dasein, the Hindu religious festival which I can best explain in Western terms as a Hindu Christmas day that runs solid for two weeks, started just a couple of days ago. Gelbu gave each kami, sarki, and shop helper, about 20 people in all, 2000 rupia to help them get through Dasein. Two weeks of no work along with added expense for food and gifts for family and friends is never easy for them and this extra money can really be a blessing for them.

At first, the shop people thought this money was an advance against future efforts. They simply could not accept the fact that this was a gift -- bonus -- from HI management and a few customers. They had a meeting and tried to figure it out. A lot of discussion and talk. Gelbu explained it three or four times, the kamis and sarkis finally got it, and Gelbu like everybody else in Nepal including schools, government offices, banks, etc., was ready to lock up the shop for two weeks. Another meeting and more discussion by kamis and sarkis. Finally, they came to Gelbu and here is what they said -- roughly.

"Everybody will stop work in Nepal for Dasein. It is our tradition and how it has always been done. But, we do not want to stop work for all of Dasein, we want to work for six more days and complete these khukuris for Pala, Didi, our American Bena and our American customers. They do not observe Dasein in American and our customers there want their khukuris. It is because of them that we have this 2000 NC in our hands which is like a gift from Heaven itself. It is up to us to repay this kindness the best we can and we can do this by working six days of Dasein. We have all agreed to do this and we want to do it. Our Gods will understand what we are doing and will not condemn us but rather they will bless us for this effort and will also give a special blessing to these khukuris and to all the people who buy them. This is our request. It is what we want to do."

Gelbu agreed to keep the shop open six days into Dasein -- an unheard of action in Nepal. The kamis will complete 92 khukuris before quitting for Dasein, including our run of Banspatis. Even Ganga Ram who is not a regular employee but got his 2000 Nc bonus anyway, is staying on to work the extra six days. He will not complete his run but will have four more specials ready to ship before he goes to his village for Dasein.

They may belong to the lowest caste in Nepal but these are some of the finest men one can find. My hat is off to our shop people. They are the best in more ways than one.

!!!
Wow. That really says something about now the kamis and sarkis feel about their work - more important than Dasein.

Shows the hybrid type of character the people in Nepal have. Hard working, tough, and family orientated. I think that's great.

Honor their gods by honoring their values which were taught by that religion and culture. Makes sense to me. I can see why you love these people, Uncle Bill.

Bill, if there's a way you can separate the ones worked on during Dasein, some of us might care to know if we were getting one. Can't hurt to have an extra blessing. Maybe a special mark somewhere.

( Of course I'm swearing off for a while after the Balance Khukuri comes tomorrow, sure I am. Hey, I lasted 5 weeks the last time! )

Does this mean that my Royal Khukri, touched by only Bura,The Royal Kami, is ahead of schedual?

It is the honorable spirit and pride of these folks that has led, over time, to the mystique of the khukuri. This incident only serves to illustrate that true nobility is a matter of character and has precious little to do with titles or wealth.

Will this behavior cause problems in the community for them? Once again I curse my ignorance! I may never understand the Kami culture. I'm sure that tokens of appreciation were sent to make the holiday season a little easier on their lives when they are unable to earn a living during this important time. Now, they are cutting their vacation short in order to work so that we won't see any slowdown in orders or the like.
I would rather see them enjoy the extra time with their families and not have to worry about getting the orders out.
Of course I have paid vacation, and too little time to spend with my family as it is. I won't forget to mention that I currently have no Khukuris on order. That must explain my generosity! Anyway, I hope this doesn't upset their apple cart.
Always a pleasure,
Sutcliffe

Dasein is roughly a two week run. The kamis will still have plenty of time to celebrate. They will get paid for their extra work and will also have the 2000NC bonus. Having been there and seen how little some of the poor have who try to "celebrate" I am happy in my heart knowing that this will be probably one of the best Daseins any of these kamis will ever have had.

Bura and his son worked together on the Banspatis -- not just Bura alone.

Indeed, congratulations to the kamis for they gain much good karma for this action. Also, congratulations to HI management for the Dasein bonus, much good karma to them. And lastly, congratulations and lots of good karma to HI clients, for without your khukuri purchases and/or your donations, this would not have happened. A win-win situation for all and lots of good karma generated.

That's what all the thoughts going through my mind right now are.
And to think I put off buying a Khukuri through the mail from someone I didn't know.

My Elders always tell/told me that things happen when they are supposed to.I know that is true, but another "thing" I don't understand.

Cornbread ain't s'possed ta be sweet!....Dagnabit gurl, whut did they teach you way up north in ....;) hehehe.

Take it from one who has been there, when these kamis and their families are doing their Dasein prayers each of us is going to be included, like it or not.

Gelbu said when he gathered them together to pass out the money they were all flabbergasted -- simply could not believe what was happening. Kept looking at him, down at the cash in their hands, looking at each other, asking what was going on. Was it real or a good Dasein dream they were having.

Until you have been so poor you and your family are hungry and don't know where your next meal is coming from you simply can't understand how the kamis feel. We do not realize just how very fortunate we are in this country.

My past days were just like the present days of those Kamis, Sarkis & Shop Helpers! I can feel the sense of appreciation for each & every dollar given as a gift. Sometimes we just cry - no words! - as a manifestation of our thankfulness to any gift given at the correct time of needs!

I think a bond of mutual respect is forming between the kamis and the HI customers, and that it is a good thing.

Khukuri FAQ

Pakcik Bill.
What festival Dasein is? Is it Devali or Depavali (Light Festival)? There are Hindus in Malaysia but we never heard about Dasein being celebreted by them - Does it means that Dasein is only celebreted by certain sect of Hindus especially in Nepal?

Dasein (Dashera in India) is probably the most celebrated of any Hindu religious festival on the subcontinent. What Hindus do in other parts of the world I am not sure. I am not Hindu and don't know enough about it to comment much but major players are Durga and Kali. It is taken very seriously and I have on a shelf in front of me a few Dasein cards sent to me by family and friends back in Nepal.

Modh, the festival of lights to which you referred is held later in the year. In Nepal it is called "Tihar" and in India "Diwali." It is my favorite. Laxmi is the major player and, in fact, the "lights" are put out so she can find her way to your home.
