I am not surprised by the reactions of the kamis to the gift money. Several months ago, I read a tourist book about Nepal. It said that many Nepalese have great difficulty understanding the concept of "something for nothing." "My point is" to point out that this shock to the money is rooted in Nepali culture.

As it turns out the kamis would not accept "something for nothing" and elected to work during the first six days of their holiday. I view it as bonus pay rather than a gift now.
