One Big Knife

Mark Hazen brought a prototype by the studio to show me and I wanted to post it to get a reaction from you gentlemen. The blade is 9" and ground on top for chopping and of course the belly is for cutting. I know he plans to change the guard material but other than that I think he is going with it.

Ah man, that's cool! Looks like an excellent survival blade. What type of sheath will it have? Pricing? Very nice.

Awesome! With a blade like that, you spend all day looking for an excuse to obliterate something

Great job Mark!

Wow, looks great. Approximately how much did it weigh?

The good thing about gun registration is that it will put an end to crime. Afterall, every robber uses a .44 Marlin to rob a bank, right?

It only took 7 months to receive my FAC.

Is it me, or does that awesome knife have a brass guard and a silver butt? What's up wit dat?

I think the Whitehunter from Puma has left its mark on this knife, it may be it's little brother. Mark's knife came in at 19 ounces on my postal meter but this is a prototype as you can tell from the mixed guard and pommel materials. Add a good leather sheath and some finishing touches and I'll put my name at the top of the list for one.

Ok a critique from looking at a picture alone ?!?

IMHO
I would probably want the thumb ramp serations to be a little less agressive. They look really cool but the only things they are serrating is the meat of your thumb.I like some texturing but that might be a little harsh.

I also dont know how I feel about the partial serrations on the blade. I have cut through some rough stuff with the saw on my Leatherman so I know that you can get some work done with three inches of teeth. I think its just a knee jerk for me. I like my blades to be either serrated or not.

I like the belly forward design. It looks like it would be an excellent chopper. If its from thin enough stock it would probably serve well as a Super machete. Id love to see it in a somewhat flexible 3/16. Anyone else think so or am I nuts.

Nice looking knife !

PS Does anyone else think that this knife could look wicked with a Double guard. I wish I were better with photoshop I would try flipping the brass over to create one.

Alex, Mark and I were talking about the serrations and I kind of agree with you. I think they are a little useless myself. The thumb cuts work out well, it does give you a bit better control of the blade by being able slide your thumb forward. If you are doing some serious cutting your thumb will be wrapped around the handle. On the matter of double guard, I think it might get in the way of using the chopping grind on the top of the blade, but hey, I've been wrong before. The nice thing about a custom knife is that most makers will make slight modifications for you if you are willing to wait.
