Hi traditional forumites,I'm looking for a traditional knife (stainless or carbon)with a clip point & an awl.

I use the awl almost as much as I use a knife. They're so handy.:)

I was looking at the GEC Wrangler thread & thought "That would make a great little EDC" then I seen it had two blades.I'm only looking for one blade.

Just one blade and an awl, around 3.5"-3.75" OAL

Jigged bone or stag would be great, but I don't mind synthetics either.

Does this knife exist?

Charlie's HJ6?

While not just 2 blades, what about the #57 Outlaw? Same frame as the Wrangler.

GEC #54 harness jack, I also use a awl/punch a lot this 3618pu is nice and comfy in the pocket and I tend to use the sheepsfoot more than the clip. I love GEC but this Case is 1/5th the $$$

Thanks Stich2442.I found a #54.I like that one better than the HJ6,though it is a little longer than I prefer.

Great Eastern Tidioute Harness Jack Knife, model 542208P, Punch

Measures 4 1/8" closed.

Frontier Bone handle, nickel silver bolsters, Tidioute inlay shield

1095 Carbon Steel Blades

87 bucks shipped seems steep,aw heck you only live once right?:)

Does the #54 have a half-stop?

I'd prefer it didn't,but I can live it.

Anyone have this model?

I don't have that model but I have a short list of GEC knives with half stops. The 54 Harness Jack does have half stops according to my list.

+1 for Charlie's HJ6.
Can't imagine anything else so close to your requirements...and it's a wonderful knife too :)

I'm liking that Hj6 more & more. Why is the Northfield(HJ6) so much more than the Tidioute(#54) though?Aren't they the same company?

Yes, they're the same company. I can't give you a definitive answer but I assume its because the #54s were made in 2008 in many more numbers than the special factory order for the HJ6 that used a redesigned punch. Also, I don't notice the dealers raising their prices so that could make a difference too.

Generally the fit and finish are a little different between the Tidioute and Northfield brands, Nortfield, having deeper swedges, long pulls, maybe pinched bolsters, etc. If its gonna be a work knife I'd go Tidioute, but the Northfield is more than capable, both are excellent, comes down to personal preference & taste on the particular knife you are interested in.

S&M made harness jacks with one blade and an awl in some different series. There were 1095 examples but some of the handle materials on those had pretty limited production numbers if memory serves. I'd presume the others were in their usual 420HC. Some of them had the awl at the opposite end from the blade in case that makes any difference to you.

That's what I'm looking for,but it seems they are hard to come by.

Please enlighten me. What do you guys use the awl for?

I guess I just grew up using them. Besides the obvious use, works great making holes in wood, as a scribe, it always seems up on a ladder your drill bit looses its magnet so I've used to start a hole to hold a long screw in place, I've made stuff camping with it ( start a spoon, fishing hooks, bobbers, cedar pipe ) scraping PVC , untying knots ( like a marlin spike), I've used to retro fit things like grommets, core out, make a existing hole bigger, I'm sure the list goes on and on at least for me. I will say the Swiss Army farmer has the best one(IMHO). I find it saves a knife blade for its intended use.

The awl is for punching holes in leather (and I also use it on wood), it's a useful tool, I use it for all sorts of things!

I have a Northfield 54 and can confirm it does have half stops. Mine has a clip point blade alongside the awl in Red "Hangman's Bone".

I don't want to high jack the thread, but does anyone know why it's called "Hangman's Bone"?

Thanks... I've never found much use for the one on my SAK, but I guess I have to use my imagination a little.
