these are mods i have done that get me eaven and controable tempatures. i use the JTH7 torch that i have moded. do these mods at your own risk. ok the torch needs to put out more heat and it can :D. look at the part that connects to the propain bottle and you will see the part that pushes down the valve in the bottle. un screw that and you will see inside of it a filter of scorts made from brass. remove it by drilling but dont go through the bottom or it wont push down the tank pin. then screw back in.

so we have more heat now to eaven the tempture. to make a JTchoke you can use coper or any other thin metal you can bend. i used a Little pice of copper pipe and cut one side so i could shrink its diamature so it fits tight over the air holes on the torch head. make it tight so you can slide it back and forth to cover the holes. now start up the forge and let it come up to temp and then slide the JTchoke over the holes intell you can just barley see the flame shooting from the torch inside the forge.

what that does is restrict the air flow so not all the gas burns right in the middle of the forge and the gas spreds out while burning. it also controls oxadation which is a big problem with this forge. you dont want to chock it down so much that you get yellow flames out the front. ill post some pictures tomarow. i think the filter is to block liquide from freezing the valve. just keep the tank up. this works very well and i can evenley heat large 5"-6" blades this way.

Great! I've been working on a 2 brick forge, and have been having trouble getting enough heat. I was going to go to 2 torches. I'll try your method first.

I got a good buy on the bricks. Bought out some that weren't being made any more. After I figure out the best configuration for what I have I'll have some forges for sale.

im expermenting with increasing the jet hole size. if it works then we could get tons more heat output.

That filter is most likely a backflash arrester and I wouldn't remove it...

Cheers Rody

by playing with the jet size i have gotten a flame 3-5 larger in diamiter. will post pictures

If you need more heat, you could go to a MAPP torch or just do a coffee can forge with a simple blower setup. I posted a link to this before, Ray Rogers did a tutorial on it. This will give you more heat and a larger ID of your forge while keeping it inexpensive and portable without unsafely modifying your torch.

I think I posted this last time someone started talking about hot-rodding a 1-brick forge.

Btw JT, are you running a thermocouple in your forge to know you're soaking @1550 for 7 minutes.
