One EDC Only

If I narrowed it down to one carry knife my daughter would have a fit. I've never met a 4 year old that wanted to pick out a knife each day, but if I am up and so is she, whatever she chooses (with prompting like "one clip, one slipjoint) goes in my pocket. As a neophyte maker I like having many knives around to handle when designing- plus each knife I buy must have a feature that no other knife in my collection has. I collect for diversity.

I agree with you. I've stopped buying knives. I still have a bunch laying around here, and I still have trouble settling on just one, but I've at least realized that constantly buying knives that just sit around is just not something I want to do.

Almost there. I'm at around 15 EDC type folders and counting down. I don't EDC a folder for that matter anyway, I carry a RAT Izula so they're all brand new and I'm moving them out!

I had 3 times that many at the beginning of the year. I want to get down to about 6 to 9 good solid pieces. I feel like the madness has finally left me!

I want to go back to playing with my guns again and try to avoid knife forums, websites ect.. But not yet, there's a couple more to be bought and more to pass on to buyers!

I stopped showing up here for a while, stopped keeping up on the newest Spydercos, stopped looking at knife catalogs, sold off most my collection, put the rest away in drawers until I need to use them, and have been carrying the same knife for a few months now. Just a beat to hell Spyderco Pacific Salt that has a real ugly blade from me taking it flat to the stone to thin out the edge.

*shrug*

It's light, it's always there, always sharp, always cuts what needs cut. I've never felt so happy about my knives. I'm so glad the days of staring at 8 different knives, deciding which 2 or 3 I feel like carrying that day, are over. It's no longer "What do I feel like carrying today,?" but rather "Knife? Keys? Wallet? PHone? Good to go."

Still working on applying this type of simplicity to other parts of my life though :D

Hello Vivi,
Funny, I was just thinking the other day that I'd not read a post from you for a spell.
For a goodly portion of my 50 years of knife carrying, I would carry the same knife everyday for several years. I carried one Buck 303 stockman for ~10 years. I didn't think of myself as a "knife guy" it was just part of what I put in my pockets every day.

These days I like to mix it up a bit, because I can.

I know how you feel. Right now i have a spyderco military, a benchmade griptilian, a kabar, and a fallkniven a1. What would be a perfect collection in my book would be the mili, the a1, an esee6, and a 710. I love the other ones and plan on keeping them, but as beater knives. Half way there.

;p i usually stick to EDC'ing 1 knife in particular.. i EDC em for a few months then i switch... usually cuz i bought a new 1 or i just feel like a change...

rite now im carrying my spyderco tenacious... awomse beater knife

i don't see changing up my Sebenza anytime soon (coming up on 4 years of edc), but i have other knives i use on occasion around the house, or whatever, or as a backup if for some reason i left my Sebenza at home, or lost it. i do like the idea of having something decent if needed

if i had to carry something else, it's probably between my Delica or 710.

i do like checking out other steels, blade shapes and locks though.

My EDC collection is down to three, a BM Mini Grip and 2 Spyderco FFG Delicas. Really like it that way. Trying to practice the KISS theory.

Knives are to men like shoes are to women.

*giggles*
I find looking at and buying knives (when I can afford them) to be much less frustrating and aggravating than shopping for shoes.

On the flip side, neither my father nor the last guy I was involved with ever "got" knives. I noticed recently my father's finally got a folding utility knife on his key ring, but that's after decades of using whatever was handy to tear open packages--usually a key. He still doesn't understand why my Mini Grip cost as much as it did, and that was *before* the price increase.

Also meant to say that I carried that Mini Grip exclusively for a couple of years, paired with just a Vic Classic. All my other knives sit in an Otter Box. Only recently added a Delica that complements the Mini Grip nicely, but hasn't replaced it.

I always carry a one handed opener such as SOG Flash II or Kershaw Blur but the 1 knife that goes guranteed is my SAK Tinkerer.

I also like to see character build up on my knives over years and years of use. The longer I have and heavly use the more valuable they are to me.

I concur, to me wear on knives builds character. If you hand down all your knives to your children and they ALL look brand new, theyre just going to think you were crazy. However, if some are very well used, they will tell the story of the man they served and the legacy he left behind.

That's nonsense. I want my knives to look as good as possible. I don't buy into that tired "character" argument. Beat up knives look crappy to me. I don't think, "oh what a story they must be able to tell..." To me they look like someone just didn't give a damn and treated them like crap.

I like having different knives for the diversity. One folder may be enough for practical purposes but it's not enough for me!
I will concede that I don't like having boxed up production knives that will never be used. Or so many knives that I can't realistically work them into a rotation.
But I see nothing wrong with having a dozen or two folders. Heck they don't take up much space!
I think it's human nature to sometimes want to simplify and other times want to complicate. I go through periods when I sell off a bunch of knives but then I buy more.
Now if you're talking about let's say bowie knives or choppers that you don't get as much opportunity to use as a folder - well then I think it's appropriate to have less of them. That's why I only have a few choppers! ;)

I like that idea. I sold off a few dozen high end folders over the last fifteen years. Right now I just grab a Rukus, Mini skirmish, Barrage or Sebenza.

Right now my EDC changes every day between a Tan Izula and a Blackhawk Crucible II. I don't keep knives very long. I don't like to have things that are not being used so I try to keep a small supply of knives. a EDC or two then a knife or two for camping and outdoor activity.

I've been carrying the same micarta handled Spyderco Dyad C44 for about 10 years now. Can't think of any reason to change now.

I have gone through both phases - when I thought I had "too many", and then "too less". It is typically like a wave, when I think I have invested too much in knives, I move over to flashlights, and then back here. :-)

I think if you can balance your finances okay (without getting into the "addiction" mode), this is just a part of life.

Some like wine, some like food,
I like it sharp, I like it bright.

I actually enjoy selecting which knife I'm going to carry for the day. To each his own.

True. I agree whole heartedly. Women have their underwear to make them feel good...I have two sets of edc knives ( one fixed SD/ Utility RFP/ IWB folder SD ) and use them as appropriate and how I dress or feel on that day.

Sometimes I carry just one knife out of the set...mostly the Gerber 06 auto when housebound because of my 3yr old kid.
