one firearm for all game?

No filler is necessary. After loading one of the 'flea power' rounds, I used to tap the gun to settle the powder at the base of the cartridge and tried not to lower the barrel too much. But I never had a problem with failure to fire so I stopped worrying about that. I assume the ignition is so positive because a large rifle primer has a hell of a flash and will ignite the 'hot' pistol powder regardless of where the small amount of it is inside that big cartridge case. I even know of hand loaders who've failed to powder charge a normal round and just the primer drove the bullet a good foot or more down the barrel.

I Have A savage model 24c combo gun. 22lr over 20guage, I feel that gun will cover alot of game.

You could look at Rossi or New england firearms Single shots with multiple barrels.

Savage 22/20 camper is my do all Thumper. Sorry, didn't read all the posts. Just realized it's a continued thread from the past.

Im sticking with the 338 win mag. I hand load low for common critters, and hot for the nasty critters. The ops question includes something that will provide protection, and possibly stopping a charge from a nasty, so more than a few choices that have been mentioned are out.

Slight correction re the 30-06. You can get bullets for it from 110 to 220 grains. With the 110s it's a great antelope gun and super for elk/moose/etc. with the 220s.

Also, you can small game or bird hunt with the 06 by loading empty but primed 06 cases with two or three grains of Bullseye or Unique powder, then seating one 00 buckshot ball in the case mouth with a bit of tissue or toilet paper as a 'patch.' These rounds are very short range, little noise, and quite accurate for squirrels, rabbits, birds, etc. BTW, this applies to any 30 (.308) caliber rifle from 30 carbine through 300 mag. Of course you have to load single shot but it works and works well.
A barrel twist will not allow such a wide range of bullet weights to be fired with the accuracy the peeps will be looking for. You may get 4 different bullet weights that a rifle will like.

OP said "birds to deer" didn't mention anything about stopping a charging grizzly. In the southeast I don't have anything near big enough to need a 338 win mag. Not to mention pretty tough to wing shoot birds with a 338, loaded down or not.

I would go with my double barrel 20 gauge but I would recommend a pump 20 or 12 gauge, 22 to 28" smooth bore barrel threaded for screw in chokes, a variety of chokes and equipped with adjustable rifle sights. Chris

Tried this with a H&R Topper single shot 30-30, leaded the crap out of my barrel and accuracy was horrible. Maybe just my gun but if you decide to try it have a good supply of Hoppes and bore brushes on hand. :D Chris

EDIT: 00 buckshot is .330 diameter, a 30 caliber rifle barrel is .308. The buckshot has to swage itself down to .308, might explain why my accuracy was horrible and it leaded my barrel. Chris

Did you guys patch your balls with tissue? I've never had that problem. Generally, lead projectiles won't deposit too bad in barrels if they're propelled at less than 1800fps or so. If you use too much powder and get the velocity up to 2,000fps and above then lots of leading.

Not to be the spelling police or anything, but I thought you all might be interested in knowing that the only correct spelling of that word you've been mis-spelling is "gauge." If you don't believe me, look it up, but trust me, I have.

See, you learned something today.:)
Entonces..Calibre doce es bastante mejor ? ;)

He doesnt live in deer, bird, and squirl world. There is most likely black & brown bears, cougars and stupid people who could use a good dose of 338, and im not even going to speak to the flying bird comment, Besides the caliber would have to be contient spacific at least.

Ohio??

Maybe we are talking about different posts, if so my apologies. Chris

I'm new to long guns, and was just wondering about the options. Is there one firearm that can be used for birds all the way up to deer or beyond, either by switching barrels or something else?

As mentioned a Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 combo with field and slug barrels will get the job done, but it's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none situation IMO. There are better individual choices for each job, but overall the 12 ga. shotgun is probably the most universal of all.

Savage combo gun (24C .22/20ga)
I finally put a sling on it this season. My next goal is a carrying case and have a choke installed in the pipe.
