One for every day of the week

I’m more at the “I think I know what I want the final collection to look like” position.

The good news is I think I have five of what will ultimately be a nine folder collection and enough knives to sell to fuel #6 and #7.

The bad news is it’s going to take me a long time to save up for the final two. Best case is probably another two years.

All that said, I’m thrilled that I have the five I do and could ride out the rest of my days with any one of them and be happy. Especially if it’s the small damascus Sebenza :)
That's too sensible of an approach to this dilemma but I applaud you.

"Our lady of blessed acceleration don't fail me now!" Knife acquisition acceleration that is...

After more than six months of not buying anything knife related, something I saw in an email piqued my interest last week, so I asked for it for my birthday. Today I discovered the Sig K320 via email that is this first axis lock type knife to interest me in many years, as it has a hole opener instead of a stud. I'm waiting for the AXG version to drop, aluminum and walnut scales.

I stopped buying knives 7 months ago and switched to guns and ammo. Then 11 days ago I spent over 40k on a car, cash. A $93 Civivi isn't much to ask as a birthday present, or even just to buy.

Welcome back to the disease. ☠️

No wonder I was told to sell all of my knife company stock...

I'm somewhere in between. I don't consider my collection large, and I certainly don't have as many as I had during my initial surge of purchases in the first few years of the hobby; but I am still susceptible to impulse purchases when I see a knife I want, and I have no desire to put limits on that.

What initially sparked my change in perspective was a move cross-country 5 years ago (from FL to the PNW), where I also decided to keep my properties back home, leaving me with expenses in both locations. At that time I made the decision to consolidate, get rid of some knives I deemed redundant in my collection, and focus on fewer, higher ended knives. First was the Inkosi Insingo, and I carried that as my main knife for a year or so. Eventually, the bug bit me anew and I did start purchasing again, but with the realization that it's not all about ownership of every cool knife I see, and that I can get more personal enjoyment out of a select few. I still get the "MUST HAVE!" fever when I see some knives, and I'm still often quick with the trigger on many of those occasions, but it takes alot more than it used to to give me that feeling.

I also, by nature, am the type to get rid of things rather than holding on to them. This is something that I've always done. My first business actually was when I was in middle school, as a Baseball Card vendor, turning my childhood hobby into funds for my future interests. Likewise with knives, if I get bored with one I move it along and try something new that excites me. I don't fool myself into thinking my tastes have evolved though, just that I like experiencing new stuff. And the knives that I don't loose interest in after having for a while are likely the long-term keepers.

To answer the original question, I do think I am at a place where I feel like my collection is somewhat complete, and for the most part manageable, however I am far from being done with purchasing more. Luckily I now get the same enjoyment from a new SAK or Plastic Spyderco in an interesting steel, as I do from more expensive purchases; and alot of my purchases these days are driven by ideas I have for customization, which I find most enjoyable of all. I don't think I'll ever have an extremely large collection again, but I also don't think I'll ever stop buying new knives.

"A jack of all trades a master of none" guides my choices lately. I have focused on three makers and appreciate the depth of their abilities. I know I maybe missing out on many great knives but the forum let's me enjoy them vicariously.

Benchmade, Olamic, Chris Reeve, and Spyderco are my "go-to" brands...
But nothing is off the table!

I'm currently trying to sell some on the exchange *cough cough* but I'm also still looking for just pure users that fit into my daily life. I'm a manager and the most use my knife sees is helping unwrap a pallet sometimes and cutting down diaper boxes at home.

I have dialed in on what I seem to enjoy more so I'm trying to just refocus my collection. If I can sell off a couple that don't get used much I think I'll be down to 5 knives. I know I'll pick up some more here and there but I know they will be ones I enjoy more.

I am over an explosive growth, learned more about what I want, inevitably ended up with a few pieces I mostly sold already and slowed down my buying about sixfold. Ended up with a collection with a five distinct groups of hard users (plastic scales, salts), fancy/urban EDC folders (Ti and CF scales), beautiful wooden scales (both fixed and folders), SAKs, and machetes (Condors).
