One hand slipjoints

My friend had West Nile virus which has left him partially paralyzed on his dominant left side. He too cannot operate a lot of knives since he has trouble pinching them open or using a nail nick. His favorite is the inexpensive Case Caliber. It does lock though, but it is a very unobtrusive knife. By nature a lockback can be easier to open than a slipjoint.

Yes indeed, I have a Queen Small Lockback which is a joy to open. It's my bedside table knife. I wonder if the simple answer is just to talk to some policeman and a doctor and get some letters written. :(

What about a Case Russlock? Similar too a friction folder, but it has a liner lock. Easy to open one handed and easy to unlock as well.

Hrm...

How about an opinel with the ring removed and drilled for a thumb stud, and tapping the pin will tighten up the pivot a touch to keep it closed.

A Knives ship free pocket slip will work nicely as a pocket sheath to make sure there won't be any accidents.

It would be an easy mod, and if the OP isn't up to the task, i would do it for him. He would just have to supply the parts or coin and I will do the work for him free of charge.

You might want to consider the Rotosphere knives, if you're not averse to non-American traditionals. They're friction folders, but the ball prevents them from closing too easily.

Here's one in the Le Thiers pattern, but I've seen them as Laguioles as well.

You might also consider a higonokami, either in the most traditional form by Nagao or fancier ones by makers like Hiroaki Ohta.

I like these sword blade ones:

Here's Ohta's:

I just found this thread again, I had missed your post. Can I say thank you for a very kind offer? Very gentlemanly of you Sir!

I actually went with a GEC #15 Navy knife in the end. It answers my problems in the following ways:

a)The bail is useful for pulling the knife out of a pocket or sheath even with reduced pinching strength, I can just hook a finger in the bail and pull.
b)The nail nick is far forward giving easier opening because I have more leverage on the pull (no idea what the proper physics term is, sorry).
c)The blade is so far out of the handle that I can pinch it open, or half pinch half pull on the nick even with weak fingers.
d)The half stop is really useful, especially when closing.
e)The lack of tip means that I don't have to worry about my fingers losing grip when opening and sliding over the tip and getting sliced. The design of this blade is such that with the correct angle I can still easily pierce into crispy bread for example.
f)The bail sticking out of the back gives a more secure 'feel' in the hand of what is actually a rather small knife. That was a nice surprise. Gives somewhere for the pinky to sit.

Oh yeah and I know it's not a good seller and there are loads still around but as far as I'm concerned, it looks incredible. :D
