The idea of getting some natural tinder burning using only one hand was still on my mind so today I headed out to re-visit the task !

Man was it ever cold today, a crisp frost carpeted the forest and crunched under my every step !

Maisy demonstrated her bushcraft skills and showed me how to remove a section of Cedar bark as the natives did long ago......

Eventually I arrived at my rest spot and set up to try my one handed fire lighting once again, it's often handy having an extended tang for splitting fatwood such as this....

This time I had success...thank the lord for that, now I can sleep again !

Feeling confident I decided to see just how small a knife you could do this with......

A little tougher this time, I know I look very clumsy but please remember it is below zero and I'm trying to film with my other hand !

Some days things just go your way eh !

No buddy it was this little ML that I put the scales on, the Jute wrapped knife is by Stomper and is only about as big as the scales on the ML !!!!!!:D

Nah I meant the smallest one to be used for starting a fire one handed.....for today anyway !!!!:D:thumbup:

Excellent thread! Learning to do things with one hand is an important aspect of practicing survival skills that I often overlook. Never really thought of using a knife this way although it makes perfect sense. Thanks for the tip!!

Thats a really cool trick. I'm going to have to try that one!

ALRIGHT PIT!! Good job! I'm glad to see it can be done with a really small knife. Makes me want to get Bryan to make me up another 3 inch fire knife to try some other techniques with. Personally so far I have found I have the best luck getting the fatwood to light when the sparks are directed down onto it but you have effectively proven that doesn't have to be the case.

Awesome pictures, I wish we had cedar trees that big around here, the biggest ones I've ever seen here were only about half that diameter.

That is truly bad assed - not only getting it - but filming it.

Pit - as a congrats - PM me your address - I want you to test one of my tinder kits - you are perfect to do so.

I will toss in a bunch of extra crap too.

Good stuff Pit, congrats on your success:thumbup:

TF, that is awfully generous of you! Way to go big guy. :)

TF that sounds awesome buddy, I've messaged you !;)

Great photos, and interesting as always. Thanks.

I have a small 'fire' knife too. It was carefully ground from a file so as not to lose any hardness. It was designed to be a flint striker (real rock flint or quartz etc) that also was useful to cut things if necessary. The sheath is made from food grade conveyor belt.
