One I Made For ME!

Greg,
That knife is absolutely gorgeous. Doesn't surprise me a bit, though...you're a fantastic maker! Good luck with the design.

Very nice looking knife. If you'd like a darker look, just leave it out in the sun for a day. Osage tans nicely.

Post a pic in a year and I bet it is almost brown in color. I think osage just gets better lookin with age.

Thanks for the info Plywood!

My Aikido teacher told me of a fellow uchi deschi when he was in California who had a bokken made from osage and it was bright yellow when they got it and it turned darker and darker over a year.

This handle is already darkening.

Greg

Sorry I don't know how to post pics here, but here is a link to my picture page. The first one has an Osage and leather handle and a Helle blade. Lately, I just put handles on blades and let others do the blades. I make longbows for a hobby for friends and make knife handles to match their bow handle.

I made a set of nunchakus that are bocote footed with osage. I'll post a pic if your interested. I mainly studied Isshinryu.

Now that is really cool!

Great contrast and I bet nice and heavy.

Last time I played with nunchucks was about 16 years ago and I "tapped" the jewels with them and I damn near passed out.

I had to go horseback riding later that day too......horse needed shock absorbers!

How about an updated pic?

It's been a year...

:D

DO we have to give yearly updates on everything we make for ourselves? Because I have a lot that ended up "for me" when I screwed something up,a nd I dont' think y'all wanna see pictures of them again every year. Cuz at least hopefully, I"ll be posting pictures of better stuff by that time. That's the hope anwayys. ;)

Here is a recent pic:

Still looks great. Has the handle gotten darker from use/refinish, or is it just lighter than reality in first picture?

That's all I needed to know. Thanks, Greg!

Don't you love it when it gets better with time?

Excellent.

Greg,
Two words came to mind just now when I saw that pic:
REALLY SWEET!

Man, that baby is aging well. I guess I better go get some Osage Orange from "The Wood Shop" cuz I'm getting envious of the pieces I've been seeing lately.

Thanks for that updated pic!

All the best,
Mike U.

Greg How did you finish the Handle?
I have a hard time keeping Osage orange from looking dirty.

I think that on this one I just sanded it and gave it several coats of Tru-Oil...then several coats of Minwax paste.

Thanks for the compliments guys....the knife is a super performer...3x quench, 3x temper....and old Dodge leaf spring!

No kiddin,Greg, that's a really nice piece of work! probably 3/4 of my knives have osage handles. The way the wood is to work is great. I cut and dry my own osage, which is a very common wood in this area. I cut gnarly limbs and curved limbs. Knots in osage are tight and don't loosen, the wood doesn't check, even when drying. Another thing about a lot of osage, much of it that contains the contrast grain has a 3-D effect in the grain. It takes about any kind of finish very well, also. Good choice, guy, and you did the wood justice. I should add, I air dry my wood in my shop, just put it in some large drawers and forget it.

really like the way that looks,a nd way it aged, and nknow lots of y'all have said great stuff about it. think I may add that to shopping list for monday(depending on howmuch I spend on the blackwood and possible purple heart)

Anybody know how Osage reacts to a flame finish?

I'm considering doing it with a handle I have.

Dan
